“Mr. Erickson.” I inclined my head back.

“Do you have the dagger?”

“I do.”

“Good. I will drive the decoy.” He gestured toward a car identical to Eric’s Mercedes.Sheesh,where had they gotten it? Having money sure was nice. It took care of things that poor suckers like me could never manage.

“My men are waiting outside, and they will follow us and help in case of any eventuality.”

Where “in case of any eventuality” meant “in case a derange hybrid tries to murder us.”

After this brief explanation, he climbed into the decoy car and started the engine.

Jake approached Eric’s car, opened the passenger side door, and ushered me in while Eric climbed behind the wheel. I squeezed Jake’s hand briefly as I got in, feeling an electric jolt pass between us. He winked reassuringly, then got in the backseat. I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing he would be with me.

I always wanted him by my side.

Chapter 7

The garage door opened. Ulfen drove out first, followed by us. He took a right while Eric veered left. Four additional black cars waited outside. Two followed Ulfen while the others stuck to our tail. Eric kept an alert watch in the different mirrors, the same way he had when we’d gone out this morning.

We drove out of Ballwin, where Eric’s house was located, and headed East on Hwy 100.

“Where’s the meeting?” Jake asked from behind me.

Eric peered at him in the rearview mirror. “I’m not allowed to say.”

“Same thing my grandfather told me.”

“Only members are allowed to know the location. So maybe when you officially join, when you’re a pack leader, they’ll tell you.”

“To be honest, I don’t really want to know.”

“I don’t blame you.”

Eric had once been a pack leader, but he didn’t seem to think much of the position anymore, and who could blame him? If he hadn’t been pack alpha, his family would still be alive.
