Page 36 of The Tracker's Rage
“You passed me in the hall,” I said, realizing that the breeze I’d felt had been Eric. “That was as fast as a vampire.”
“Faster,” he shrugged one shoulder, “than most at least. The really ancient ones, they might as well be teleporting.”
“I had no idea.”
“We guard our secrets well, Sunder.”
“I’m starting to realize that. Shit, you’ve been holding out on me, and now that it’s our last day, you’re rubbing it in.”
Eric gave me a crooked smile, loaded with a heavy dose of satisfaction. The bastard.
“What else is there?” I asked.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?”
I gritted my teeth, my anger bubbling like a witch’s brew. “Asshole,” I said under my breath and walked past him.
“I’ll see you this afternoon,” he said, pulling away from the wall.
“Huh?”
“I’ll be at Damien’s. He told me you’ll help him get the ingredients for his cure.”
Damien had called me yesterday to say he would like my help, after all. An unexpected change of heart but a welcomed one.
“We also talked about how well your training is going.” Eric went on. “It made us realize that if I teach you a few more things, you might actually be a nice addition to our team. So you’re welcome to come back here anytime from now on. Just remember, 4 AM.”
My jaw unhinged and nearly dropped to my boobs. Eric Lone, the werewolf with the meanest reputation in all of St. Louis, wanted to keep teaching me out of the goodness of his heart? And join their team? What team? I thought Damien and Eric hated each other.
Eric’s blue eyes twinkled, and for the first time, he smiled without sarcasm or conceit. But too quickly, he sobered. “Get the hell out of here before I change my mind.”
I backed away toward the door, biting my tongue to hold back a million questions. I wanted to ask all of them at once, but I managed to keep them in. Eric was willing to teach me more, maybe even to move as fast as a vampire.
Holy shit, I kind of felt like I’d won the lottery.
