Page 26 of The Tracker's Rage
“Oh, my savior!” Lucia snatched a coffee, unbalancing the holder.
Jake’s quick reflexes kicked in, and he managed to gracefully offer Dani the next cup. When he turned to me, I took it begrudgingly.
“Mrs. Sunder,” Jake inclined his head, “I’m pleased to see you’re all right. I didn’t get you a coffee because I figured you wouldn’t be allowed to drink it.”
“Jacob Knight.” Mom raised her eyebrows and regarded him appreciatively. “I’d heard you were back in town. Though, if I hadn’t, maybe the unexpected wolf attack would have clued me in.”
Jake winced but said nothing.
“Mom, this is not his fault,” I said.
“Isn’t it though?” I got the feeling she wanted to say more, but given that we’d just reconciled and she didn’t know where Jake and I stood, she refrained.
Dani, as always, became the voice of reason. “I don’t think this is anyone else’s fault but Blake Foster’s.”
No one could argue with that. He didn’t have to be such a psycho killer. Next time I saw him,Iwas going to killhim.
Lucia sipped her coffee, smacked her lips, then asked, “And how do you plan to take care of thateffingbastard,Mr. Knight?”
“Language, Lucia.” Mom scowled.
My little sister rolled her eyes. “I saideffing, Mom.”
“You did. And also used the ‘b’ word.”
“Whatever.”
“Just wait ‘till I’m out of this bed, young lady.”
Lucia ignored the threat and gave Jake a pointed glare.
“I have already been looking into his whereabouts, and I have a few leads,” Jake said.
I paused with my cup halfway to my lips. “You do?”
Jake’s eyes locked with mine. “You don’t worry about it. Take care of your Mom, and I’ll take care of Blake.” He bowed respectfully. “Ladies, I’m glad you’re all safe. Good day.”
I wanted to follow after him and demand that he keep me in the loop, but since I didn’t want my family to worry, I did the next best thing.
You tell me if you find him, I spoke in his mind using my alpha skills.
I sensed a grunt from him and nothing else. As I shook my head with irritation, I noticed Lucia leaning forward to check out his ass. I slapped her shoulder, heat climbing up my neck at her audacity.
She rolled her eyes, her favorite pastime. “You’re all such prudes.”
Moments later, two policemen appeared at the door with instructions from Detective Freeman to guard the patient and make sure she got home safely. It gave me some peace of mind, but I wouldn’t feel completely at ease until Blake was behind bars.
Or better yet, dead.
