“I don’t know. It’s a hunch.”
“Another of your hunches.”
“So far, they’ve been pretty spot on, if I may say so myself.” She turned and lay her head on his chest. “So, what’s our next move on the case?”
“I will talk to Waldo about what I saw tonight,” Oliver said thoughtfully. “He has texts in his library on the Dark Dimension and the prophecies. There will be spells, ways to bring people back. Damn it, worst scenario if they take you, I will crash in there and carry you away.”
“And the other missing humans, would you leave them to their fate?”
He was silent for a moment, then he said quietly, “For the first time in my career, I feel out of my depth, Clare.”
She sat up, gazing steadily into his eyes. “Together we are stronger, Oliver, you must know that.”
“I sense it. I just wish I knew how it would all pan out.” He sighed.
“Oliver, our magick, yours and mine, will solve this case. We will know the moment when it comes. Please trust me.”
“I do.”
“My, oh, my,” she teased. “I almost think you are treating me as an equal. Sir.”
The dark eyes that stared into hers were full of awe. “You are far and away superior to me, my beloved.”
Clare felt a wave of powerful desire coiling inside of her once again. Their lovemaking had unleashed her inner siren, and that was the most powerful magick of all.
“Then as your superior I order you to kiss me, again. Here.” She pointed to her nipple. He obliged willingly.
“And now here.” Again, Oliver complied.
“Oh… and here.” She spread her thighs and with a husky laugh he moved between her legs, nestling his head right into her greedy cunt.
Clare’s head fell back on the pillow, her eyelids fluttered, and she gave in to the stroke of her vampire’s tongue between her folds.
CHAPTER 28
He tried to get out of bed without rousing her, but since they were still entwined from their last energetic bout of lovemaking, it was no easy task. Finally, he managed to disentangle her arms and legs gently and pull the coverlet over her. Finding his clothes, he dressed quietly. But she must have sensed he was no longer lying next to her, because she reached out a slender arm and patted the empty mattress, then raised her head. “Where are you going?”
“To do some investigative work. While you stay here.”
“And do what?”
“There’s food and coffee in the kitchen, then… I don’t know—read a book maybe.”
“Read a book!” She looked so horrified even in her sleepy state, he had to laugh.
“Yes, Clare, there is a library of books downstairs, and a world beyond work.”
She cast him another outraged look and he couldn’t resist sitting down beside her on the bed. Hooking a finger under her chin, he gazed deep into her eyes.
“Stubborn little human. Do. Not. Disobey. Me.”
She huffed. “I thought we were equal now.”
“No, I said you were superior to me. But that doesn’t mean you should disobey me.”
“You can’t seek obedience unless you tell me where you’re going.” She pouted, but her eyes twinkled.
“I’m off to see Waldo about storing some of your blood, then to interview Dorothea, Matteus Kominsky’s mother.”
