LOGAN
G uilt gnaws at me, but when I look down at Poppy , I can’t feel too bad.
She’s curled against me, her bare body pressed to mine, her head resting on my shoulder.
There’s a soft, dreamy little smile on her lips—the kind of smile you only see when a woman feels completely satisfied, completely safe.
She looks like she doesn’t have a care in the world, and I know I put that look on her face.
How the hell can I regret that?
I stroke her back slowly, tenderly, feeling the warmth of her skin. Some of it’s from the fire still burning low in the hearth, but most of it is from me—my Alpha heat wrapped all around her. She arches her back a little, stretching like a cat, and lets out a sound that’s almost a purr.
My sweet little kitten.
“You make me feel so good,” she whispers, her voice drowsy with contentment. “ So safe…so…”
She trails off, biting her lip as her gaze flicks up to my face and then away.
I know what she wanted to say. Hell , I wanted to say it too. Loved . I make her feel loved—that’s the word hanging between us, unspoken.
But neither of us dares give it voice. Not while she’s still married to my no-good little brother.
The thought of Dirk makes my teeth grind.
I bend and kiss the top of her head, murmuring something low and soothing, as I let my mind drift for a moment.
I need to call the private investigator I hired and see if he has any updates.
Last I heard, Dirk was still off the grid.
No money trail, no sightings. Like he dropped off the face of the earth.
Part of me hopes he’s rotting in a ditch somewhere. But the bigger part of me hopes he’s alive—because if I can get my hands on him, I can force the bastard to sign the divorce papers.
I went to an attorney a few weeks back, told him I was helping out a friend. Explained the situation briefly, without naming names. He prepared the paperwork, all neat and tidy. If Dirk shows his face again, I’ll make damn sure he puts pen to paper. One way or another.
Then Poppy will finally be free.
Free to be mine in every way.
I know the local Pack would still frown on it—even after a divorce, they’d consider us too closely “related.” Sister -in-law is the same as sister in their eyes. But I don’t give a damn what the Pack thinks. I’ve been a lone wolf too long to care about their rules and their whispered judgments.
All I want is Poppy .
Forever.
I look down at her again. Her long lashes flutter like delicate fans against her flushed cheeks.
Her mouth is soft, her curvy body limp with satisfaction—utterly relaxed.
She’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever held in my arms. My Wolf stirs inside me, satisfied for now but still restless, still wanting more.
We should have knotted her. We almost did. Why did you stop?
Not now—not yet, I tell him silently. Soon . For tonight, we gave her what she needed. That’s enough.
For now.
