“Joey.” Bobby snaps his son’s name. “See these two hoodlums out.”

The younger DelMarco reaches my chair so fast I blink. I stand and so does Trajan.

“Can you think of a reason someone would kill those women?” Trajan sounds reasonable, but the air crackles in response to his question.

“Good night,” is all Bobby will say, and his wife stays silent.

“Well, if you think of anything, call my associate Connor MacPherson.” Trajan offers a business card to Bobby, who ignores him.

The young DelMarco grabs my shoulder, just this side of rude, and I shake free. “All right, we’ll go. Thank you for your time.”And for tying things up so neatly. Trajan sets the business card on the small table in the foyer, and we leave.

We make it out to the car without any inadvertent snake-wrestling, and Trajan has us on the road to home a helluva lot faster than we got here.

“Okay, that was weird, right?” I finally manage.

“Yup,” he says grimly. “That was weird.”

“Do you think DelMarco killed them?”

“But why? What happened in the last month to prompt him to take action now, after forty years?”

“Good question.”

Trajan wrangles his big rig through traffic on the Ten and I text Connor, asking where we can meet.

Because he and Smith need to know what we’ve learned, and it’s not the kind of info I want to share over the phone.
