“I don’t know. What do you think I should do? You’ve got more long-term relationship experience than I do. Do I wait and give her time, or go after her until she realizes I’m not going anywhere?” I had hoped she’d change her mind once she had time to think things through, but day after day passed with no word from her. My hope and my pride were defeated.
“Is Harper the type to change her mind the longer you’re away?”
I snorted. “Harper? No, she’d dig her heels in. She’s so stubborn.”
“Then you have your answer.” Max had encouraged me to go after her in the beginning.
“I do.” It was so simple. I should never have left in the first place. I should have waited until my relationship with Harper was in a secure place before I accepted another role. Now that I’d decided my next steps, I needed to take immediate action. “Max, I’m sorry I have to go. I need to figure out how I can get the rest of my scenes filmed quickly and then head to Rhode Island.”
“It’s about time!” Cheers erupted behind Max off-screen. “You know we’re behind you. Bring Harper to visit soon. Good luck.”
“Thank you.” I hung up and raced out of my trailer. I needed to find Amber. She’d been good friends with our director for years. She’d know the best way to approach her without jeopardizing my contract.
It was time I got my family back.
My phone rang, halting me in my tracks. I whipped it out of my pocket, hoping it was Harper. Instead, an unknown number from Rhode Island flashed across the screen.
Afraid something was wrong, I picked up.
“Lincoln? It’s Hope,” she said hesitantly.
“Are Harper and the baby okay?” I whispered hoarsely. This was my nightmare. Something happened, and I wasn't there to help.
“They’re fine. I’m sorry, I should have led with that.”
I released a deep breath that had caught in my chest while I waited for her response. “Thank God.”
“I need you to come back to Rhode Island. How fast can you get here?”
I texted my uncle. “I need a favor. How soon can your pilot come get me?”
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Harper
My hands shook as Ipunched in the familiar code to unlock the heavy wooden door. I hadn’t been back in this house since the day Lincoln had rushed me to the hospital. Memories assailed me as I pushed the door wide open—Lincoln chasing me up the stairs as I’d playfully run from him, us figuring out what furniture to keep, and the day we’d had a picnic on the living room floor.
