DEADLY GLUTTON
Cynthia Hickey
Chapter One
Harper sat ina chair while a paramedic looked at the knot on her head and shined a flashlight in her eyes. “My partner needs attention more than I do.”
“He’s receiving it but will most likely be sent to the clinic for stitches.” The man straightened. “You’ve got a minor concussion. Take it easy for a few days.”
She didn’t have a few days. Robert had started on another sin. More people would die. “Thanks.” She pushed to her feet, gripping the table when a wave of dizziness washed over her. Once she steadied, she made her way to Liam.
“I need stitches.” He twisted his lips. “Mind making a pit stop?”
For him? She absolutely didn’t mind. “Sure. We need to figure out our next step anyway. I’ll drive.”
“No, ma’am.” The paramedic who tended to her shook his head. “Not with a concussion.”
She should’ve kept her mouth shut. If she could walk, she could drive. She stared at him without responding, until he shrugged and strolled away.
“I can drive with one arm.” Liam slipped his arm into the sling he wore.
“I’m fine.” She sighed, torn between staying and help case the scene or get Liam to the clinic for stitches. She chose the clinic. “Come on. The other agents can handle this.” She cast one last glance at the two bodies still slumped over the table, then at the shocked faces of those being held in the dining room. She spotted the man Liam had questioned.
He looked resolved rather than shocked. She nudged Liam and continued to search the faces in the room, finding two more men who looked unsurprised. None of them seem concerned about the dead man and woman. “We need to question those three. I’ll get Macey and Harris to have them brought to the station.”
“Good idea.” Liam gave her a smile of approval and waited near the door for her.
“Sure,” Agent Macey said. “We’ll take them ourselves, so they don’t have a chance to run.”
Or kill themselves. “Thank you. We should be there shortly after the rest of you.” It would take them a while to finish at the club.
Outside, she glanced for signs of the sniper.
“They shot from a vehicle.” Liam stepped to the passenger side of the jeep. “The shooter is gone.”
“The assassin?”
“Since she was here, that’s a good assumption.” He frowned over the hood. “Dark sedan. A Chevy, I think. I couldn’t see the license plate. I was too busy trying to duck.” He gave a short laugh. “Guess I wasn’t fast enough.”
She smiled. “Neither of us were.” She got into the driver’s seat as it started to sprinkle. A peer through the front windshield revealed rapidly darkening clouds. “We’re about to get hammered.”
“Hopefully not until after we get back to the station.”
“What’s the next step?” Harper drove from the parking lot.
“I don’t think it will be too long before we hear from Robert again. Things are speeding up the closer we get to the sin of anger. After gluttony, we only have three left.”
Then things would get really dicey for her and Liam. Robert’s anger would only be directed toward them. “I think we need more help on this case.”
“The chief is working on it, but since a lot of the deaths are also in Harrington, the precinct there can’t spare anyone.”
She cut him a sharp sideways glance. “They aren’t solving any of the deaths. It’s all been pretty much left to us, and we haven’t done very well either.”
“It will all fall into place.” He reached over and patted her shoulder. “We keep moving forward until we get him.”
She hated that being their only choice.
