Preston fell.
The man whirled and fired again, his shot grazing Liam’s left arm.
He raised his right hand and shot the man through the arm holding the gun, then through the leg. He lunged forward and kicked the rifle out of reach before cuffing the guy to a tree. Secure that he couldn’t escape, he hurried back to Preston.
“How bad is it?” He looked for blood.
“Not too bad.” He sat up, holding his side. “I’m wearing a vest. Going to have some bruises, maybe a cracked rib or two, but I’m alive. You’re bleeding.”
“Just a graze.”
“Him?”
“Shot twice and hooked to a tree.”
“Go get him. I’ll call for an ambulance.”
Liam nodded and rushed back to the shooter. “Let’s go.”
“They were all guilty of vanity!”
Liam’s blood grew cold. “What are you talking about?”
“The man running the live feed.” The young man grinned. “I’m picking up his cause. Those women jogged in clothes that hugged every curve of their bodies. They got what they were asking for.”
Liam wanted to shoot him again. “Stop talking.” He hauled him to his feet and picked up the rifle.
“I can’t walk. You shot me in the leg.”
“Then limp.” How many more idiots were out there taking up Robert’s cause? He glanced at the guy’s shoes. Same pattern as by the pond. At least they’d gotten one killer taken care of. He half-dragged, half-helped the wounded shooter to the path where Preston waited.
“Ambulance will be here in five. He say anything?” The other agent jerked his head toward the shooter.
“Confessed. Your guy idolizes my guy. Wants to be just like him.” Liam dropped the man beside a tree. “Isn’t that great?”
“We’ve got more of them?” The agent’s eyes widened.
“I’d say most likely we do.” He glanced in the direction of Oakdale. How many followers still lived in Oakdale? Were they lying in wait for a command from Robert before acting or were they gone except for crazies like the man lying on the ground at his feet?
Chapter Five
Robert strolled aroundthe compound feeling very much like a king. He might not have a lot of followers at the moment, but he did have a handful of very faithful ones. The future looked very bright indeed.
“Look at this.” Lucy hurried toward him and pulled up a newsfeed on her phone. “You’ve got fans.”
He watched as a reporter told about a shooting in a park and how the young man continued the work Robert hadn’t been able to after going into hiding. He grinned. If there was one out there, there was more. What great news!
“I’m also as bored as a person can get. Either give me a job or I search for one.”
“You can’t leave now that you’re here.”
She rolled her eyes. “Don’t be stupid. Someone can drive me out, blindfolded, then I’ll call you from…never mind.” She laughed. “I tracked this location on my phone. It hasn’t been a secret to me since we arrived.” She flipped her fingers against his head. “Guess who’s smarter?”
He’d never wanted to strangle her more than at that moment. “You’ve jeopardized our location.”
“Seriously?” She arched a brow. “I haven’t survived this long by not being smart. No one knew who I was until I got mixed up with you. In fact, I think I’m finished. It’s time for me to head overseas and continue my work there.”
“At least wait until I’ve disposed of the detective and the agent.”
