CHAPTER SIX

REMY

“ L acy! This is a surprise. I thought you would be all in wedding mode since the big day is only forty-eight hours away,” Remy Tanger said, her voice full of warmth.

She and Lacy had been friends for a while, sharing a common friend group and bonding over the stressful jobs they both worked. But Remy was surprised to hear from her today, seeing as she was marrying the love of her life in two days’ time.

“I am in wedding mode, and everything is in hand. But we’ve run into a small snag.”

“A snag?” Remy leaned forward over her desk. Lacy sounded stressed, which was very unusual. “Is there something I can help with?”

“Not thing, but who.” Lacy sighed. “Austin Davis.”

Remy closed her eyes and cursed silently. That man was a cockroach. Opening her eyes once more, she asked, “What about him?”

“He seems to be behind a phone call that’s causing us trouble.”

“Maybe you’d better start at the beginning.” Remy glanced over at the small cabinet in the corner of her office. Was it too early for a drink?

Remy spent the next ten minutes listening to Lacy’s story, her heart sinking closer to her feet with each word. She cleared her throat. “So… you think Davis supplied Gage’s name and then engineered the push to get the warrant to search his place.”

“That’s my understanding. Hell, he might have even started the warrant process by activating the ‘Good Ol’ Boy’ network and calling the judge himself. I have no idea, but he seems to be behind the push to say Gage is behind the theft.”

Remy leaned back in her chair. “Again, how can I help?” Davis had been a thorn in Remy’s side since the day she’d become aware of his existence, and his pull on the membership of the secret society she belonged to.

Lacy sighed again. “Honestly? I have no idea. I would love it if you could find out why he thinks it was Gage, or even just why he’s involved.”

“That’s unlikely. Mr. Davis and I dislike each other. He is responsible for my grandfather’s death,” she said, her voice cold and stilted.

“Oh my God, Remy. I am so sorry. I didn’t know. My sincerest apologies. Of course. you can’t deal with the man. I just remember Logan saying he was a member of the Lock and Key Society, so I thought you might have insight.”

It was Remy’s turn to sigh. “It’s not your fault.

I just loathe him for many reasons, and I hate the thought of dealing with him, but it is odd that he’s involved with the Gage situation.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the less it makes sense.

He is spending all his time in D.C. these days, trying to rebuild the power he lost after the bomb debacle at the hotel.

Certain people made his role in the whole incident known and now he’s a damn pariah.

He’s doing his damnedest to rebuild his credibility.

Not sure why he would bother with the theft at the Met, especially since it’s some inconsequential piece of art. ”

“You’re right. It doesn’t make sense. None of this makes sense.” She groaned.

Remy’s heart squeezed in her chest for her friend. She was supposed to be getting ready for the wedding, and instead, she was worried that her brother-in-law was going to jail. Gage had been nice to Remy and had helped her when she needed it. They all had.

“You know…” She tapped the arm of her chair as she thought out loud.

“It sounds to me like Davis was doing someone a favor. He probably thought nothing of it. Not sure he remembers the Callahans from the D.C. thing, but even still, he would have dismissed them as flunkies for the Society. Let me talk to Hawk. He might have some ideas about how we can find out.”

“How is Hawk? I should’ve asked before. How’s married life treating you two?”

Remy wasn’t sure how to answer that one, considering the upcoming wedding. “Hawk is great,” she said finally, trying to keep her tone light.

“Why do I feel like that’s not the truth. Not that it’s any of my business,” Lacy added quickly.

It was Remy’s turn to groan. “Okay, if I’m being honest we’re both so damn busy and exhausted we’re rarely in the same place at the same time and if we are, we’re asleep.”

Lacy chuckled. “I hear that. Logan and I always seem to be going at a hundred miles an hour or at a dead stop. I think it’s just the life phase we’re in.

In a few years, it will settle down, and we’ll have more time together.

Or so I tell myself. The big thing is to make time when you can, even if it’s just ten minutes to chat and catch up. ”

“I know. I keep telling myself that, and then someone calls or texts, or I have a meeting to get to. You know how it goes.”

“I do so I really appreciate anything you can do for Gage.”

“I’ll do my best,” Remy promised. “Can’t wait to see you on Saturday.” She clicked off the call.

Lacy was right, though. She and Hawk really did need to make more time for each other.

It was just hard now that she was running the medical arm of the Lock and Key Society.

What had started as a managerial clerical job for the hospitals the Society ran had turned into something altogether different.

Remy was now in charge of the entire medical staff at every site, making sure the Society had the latest and greatest equipment and doctors to offer to the Society members. Her new role took up a lot of time.

It didn’t help either that Hawk had taken on more responsibility under Archer Gray. Now, not only did he help with legal issues, but he also helped the security team. The two of them were just going non-stop.

She glanced at her watch. It was time for lunch. Maybe she could catch her husband for a few minutes. She knew he would want to help Gage. Getting up from her desk, she left her office and strolled through the hallways until she came to a stop outside of her husband’s office door.

“Hey there,” she said as she strolled in.

Hawk looked up from his desk. “Hey there, yourself.” He smiled at her and Remy’s heart skipped a beat. It never failed to do that. Thane Hawkins was one of the sexiest men she’d ever seen. She was damn lucky he was madly in love with her because she was crazy about him.

“What are you up to?” she asked.

“Just reading over some legal documents for Archer. I need to get back to him in”—he glanced at his watch—“about an hour on a couple of things. What about you?” he went back to reading the document that he was holding.

A slow smile spread across her face as she closed the door and locked it. “I was just talking to Lacy, and she said we have to make more time for each other, so I thought now would be a good time.”

Hawk cocked an eyebrow. “Now… as in right now? You want to have lunch or something? Sorry, honey, but I am really swamped. I don’t have time. Maybe we could schedule it for next week?”

“Actually,” Remy commented nonchalantly and began unbuttoning her blouse as she prowled around the desk, “I only have twenty minutes or so myself, but I thought maybe we could use those to refamiliarize ourselves.”

“Refamiliarize ourselves with what?” Hawk mumbled as he continued to focus on the contracts.

Remy dropped her blouse onto his lap, which brought his head up sharply, a bemused look on his face. She pulled the contract out of his hands, then spun his chair toward her. “Each other.”

Remy let the shoulder straps of her bra slip down her arms, revealing the slope of her breasts. Hawk licked his lips as he stared at her, his blue eyes going smoky. He glanced at the door, and then back at her and then he grinned wickedly. “Oh, I think I have time for that.”

He reached for her, slipping his hands around her torso and unclasped her bra.

Her breasts bounced as she jiggled the lacy garment down her arms. Hawk spread his thighs, and she stepped between them, draping the bra around his neck.

He nuzzled one swell, then the other, returning to the first one and sucked the nipple hard.

She arched her back, then slung her right leg over his thigh, and sat down, rubbing her clit over the hard muscle. Between that pressure, and the tug of his lips on her tit, excited tingles charged through her.

Hawk pressed both his hands flat on her shoulder blades, holding her in place while he worshipped every inch of her chest. She rocked on his solid thigh and dropped her hands to the hem of her skirt, fully intending to drag the material out of the way and settle on his cock, already was engorged and ready and pressed against her thigh.

The phone rang and Hawk lifted his head, dropping one hand to the desk, as if he was about to answer the call.

“Don’t you dare,” she told him as she grabbed his hand and redirected it under her skirt. God, she was wet and so willing. The phone rang a couple more times before it stopped. Thank God, because she wanted her husband so, so much.

“Oh, baby, you are the best distraction,” Hawk mumbled against her chest before he licked her aureola, moved her panties to one side, and guided two fingers inside her. His thumb fell to her clit and tapped as he pumped his fingers in and out.

Remy swiftly unbuckled his belt, then slipped the button free and lowered the zipper.

She reached under the elastic of his underwear, and gripped his shaft, running her thumb over the slit on the crown.

Hawk’s breath sizzled in with her erotic touch, and his hips shifted on the chair, and he rocked against the cushioned back, sliding down until his hips were on the edge of the seat.

Without dislodging his fingers, Remy lifted her left leg to straddle him. While she settled, Hawk shoved his trousers and briefs down, his cock—his beautiful cock—sprang free. She hiked her skirt higher around her hips and positioned the tip of his penis near where his fingers still played.

“We only have five more minutes, Hawk. I want you to fuck me now.”

Hawk chuckled at her not-so-subtle tease. “Gladly, baby.” He brushed her hand out of the way, notched his dick at her entrance, then lifted his ass at the same time he pushed down on her hip.

They both groaned as she stretched and filled, the sensual slide of him into her.

With his fingertips digging into the flesh on her hips, he set them into a motion she knew would get them both over the finish line in no time.

She balanced above him on her knees and met each of his thrusts until their skin was slapping loudly.

Remy tossed her head back, rolling her hips to build on the friction from his pubic bone on her clit. She was close.

“Oh, fuck yeah, baby. That’s it. Every warm, tight inch of you…” Hawk trailed off as his breath shortened.

She moved her hands from his shoulders to cup his neck, his pulse pounding under her fingertips.

Every bit of her concentration focused on the pulse of his cock as he hammered into her, retreated, then pounded back into her.

Her body tightened, and sensation crested over her as she released.

Hawk bit her neck as she came and then grunted her name into her ear as he joined her jumping off the sexual cliff.

“God, I love you so much,” he groaned as he continued to empty into her.

“I love you, Hawk,” she whispered once she caught her breath. She straightened in his arms and pressed a lingering kiss to his mouth, sucking, nipping, sipping his lips while he panted beneath her.

When she pulled away and started to rise off his lap, he held her in place. Catching her gaze, his beautiful blue eyes sparkling, his expression replete. “Best lunch ever,” he laughed.

“We need to do this more. Maybe we should consider adding a lunchtime rendezvous to our calendars each week.”

“Only one?” he smirked.

“As often as you want, baby.” She pressed a kiss to his cheek just as the phone rang again. “And that is our clue to get back to work.”

As Remy did up the buttons on her blouse, she smiled at her husband. Best ten minutes she’d spent in weeks, even if they were both now very late. She gave him a quick kiss and started out of the office, but then whirled around. “I completely forgot why I originally came here. You distracted me!”

“I promise to do that more in the future. I like this distraction thing. Made my day much better.” Hawk grinned as he tucked in his shirt.

“Gage is in trouble.”

Hawk’s head shot up and he stared at Remy, all vestiges of his smile gone. “What do you mean in trouble?”

Remy went on to explain the situation. “Lacy didn’t say it, but I know she’s really worried. As in, afraid he might go to jail.”

“Shit. Of course it has to be Davis. Of all the rat bastards on this earth, he is the worst. He must have ninety million lives. I know Ryker and Archer still want the man dead. All of us do, but the President extended Davis’s stay of execution as it were.

Fuck!” He offered Remy a tight smile. “Okay, leave it with me and I’ll see what I can do. ”

She gave him another quick kiss and headed out the door.

As much as she adored her husband, she was happy to leave him dealing with Davis.

She didn’t trust herself not to seriously hurt the man.

If anyone deserved to be hurt, it was Austin Davis.

No question. Hopefully, Hawk could keep it together long enough to get the information without killing the man.

On second thought, maybe she hoped he couldn’t.
