CHAPTER THIRTEEN

GAGE, LACY & ALEX

“ H ow are you holding up?” Gage asked as he leaned over and kissed Dani on the forehead. She looked so cute in the purple dress that exactly matched the shade of her hair. She’d look stunning but for the dark circles under her eyes, and her pale, weary expression.

“I’m good.” She offered a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

“You’re exhausted. You want to head up to the room?” The last thing he wanted was for Dani to be stressed any more than what he’d already put her through over the last couple of days.

“I’m okay.” She grinned. “I want cake.”

He laughed out loud and took her hand and kissed it. “Then cake you shall have, my love.” He started to pull her toward the dessert table, but Dani’s feet remained planted. He looked at her and tipped his head to one side. “What?”

Dani cocked her head. “And I want to get married.”

Gage froze. He stared at the mother of his child, afraid to say anything in case he scared her off. He’d been dying to marry her, but she’d been holding him off with one excuse after the other. He’d finally given up asking, worrying he’d drive a wedge between them.

“Um,” Dani frowned, “you’re supposed to say something.”

“I… Are you sure?”

She nodded slowly. “Seeing Mitch and Alex… it just suddenly made sense to me.”

“Thank God. Yes. Absolutely. Yes. You just say the word and we’ll get married. Whatever kind of wedding you want, I’ll make it happen.”

Dani leaned on his shoulder and let out a contented sigh. “Small, I think.”

“Small it is.”

“But with lots of cake. I really need cake.”

Gage grinned. “We’ll have as many cakes as you want.”

“Okay, then let’s do it. Sooner rather than later. I want to do it before the bean is born,” she commented as she rubbed her stomach.

Gage wrapped his arm around the love of his life. “You just say the word.” This day had worked out better than he could have ever hoped. And for that, he was eternally grateful.

Lacy nodded to the caterer. “Yes, now would be a good time for the cake.” The caterer hustled away to make sure it was all set. Turning, she ran right into Logan.

He swung her around, and she giggled. “You’re in fine spirits.”

“I am,” he said as he put her down. “This turned out beautifully, thanks to you.”

“To us,” she countered. “You and I are an amazing team.”

“We are. And since we’ve been engaged for quite some time, what do you say we pick a date?”

Lacy met Logan’s gaze. “I think that’s a great idea.

” She bit her lip. She’d had a thought earlier, and she wasn’t sure if Logan would go for it, but since he’d brought it up…

“I was thinking, since my father is here,” she gestured toward the dance floor where Armand Fontaine was dancing with Spencer.

Who would’ve thought that an ex-arms dealer would be dancing with a former Homeland Security agent?

So many weird and wonderful things happened in her world since she hooked up with the Callahans. And she was so grateful for all of it.

“Since your father is here… what?” Logan prodded

“I was going to say,” she paused, butterflies filling her belly, “since he’s here, why don’t we get married now?”

“Now…as in today?” Logan asked.

“No, not today, but before he disappears to wherever. He brought his yacht. I was thinking we could just get married on the yacht. Just you and me and our families. Nothing big. And then you and I can take a nice honeymoon somewhere. What do you think?”

She started to smooth a hand over her hair, but Logan grabbed both of her hands. “I think that’s a great idea. I’ve wanted to marry you since we first met. I cannot imagine my life without you. The sooner, the better as far as I’m concerned.” He leaned down and kissed her.

The butterflies took flight, and she sighed contentedly. This was how life was supposed to be, and she couldn’t be any happier.

“Okay, on my count,” Alex said as she turned her back on the crowd, holding her bouquet in both hands. “One… two… three!” She tossed her bouquet over her head and then whirled around in time to see Leo catch it. She burst into laughter at his bemused state.

“Well, lass, not sure that’s what you were thinkin’ should happen, but I’m game to find a wife.” He winked, and she blew him a kiss.

It was the perfect ending to the perfect day. She grabbed her husband’s hand—her husband!—and they ran through the well-wishers, out through the house, and into the waiting limo where they started on their next adventure.
