He crossed the room in two big strides and pulled me out of my seat and into his arms.
“What’s wrong?”
I sank into his embrace and felt my body go loose.
“Nothing now.”
“I missed you this morning. Did you get here okay? Normally one of us will be home to take you back and forth. There was just a weird thing we had to do this morning. Have you already had lunch?” He pulled back enough to cup my face in his big hands. “You look like you need something to eat.”
I laughed and pushed him away.
“Maddox! What’s going on with you? I’m fine. I drove here by myself like I have almost every morning for the last five years. I don’t need to be driven around like Daisy from that movie. Ineed to pick up Belinda because driving a hundred-thousand-dollar car is not okay with me. What if I put the wrong type of gas in it? Because let me tell you right now, I do not pay for premium.”
“It’s an electric car, Harley.”
I blanched.
“See! Dear god. Yeah, I need to pick up Belinda. The only thing electric in her is questionable at best and I like it like that. I don’t have to worry about scratching her. She’s a beast. If I hit a curb in Belinda, nothing would happen. At all.”
Maddox raised his eyebrow.
“Did you hit a curb, sweetheart?”
I swallowed and shook my head.
“Nope.”
He grinned.
“Harley?”
I threw my hands up. “Fine. I hit a curb. It was tiny. I mean, it was the size of an ant hill! I had to pull over in morning traffic to pick up the bumper! People honked at me, Mad. Belinda wouldn’t have broken so easily. Who does that? Who builds a car that costs more than some people will ever pay for a home and then builds it with freaking cardboard?”
His grin had just stretched wider.
“More importantly, who buys it?”
I froze.
“You?”
“She said hopefully.” He laughed and shook his head. “Nope. Luc.”
I groaned and dropped into my chair.
“Is he going to be mad?”
“Who knows. Things that made Luc want to kill me and Jace probably won’t make Luc even blink when it comes from you.” He pulled me up from my chair and put his hands on myshoulders to guide me towards the front of the store. “Susie happened to mention it’d be okay with her if you took the rest of the day off to go get Belinda.”
I looked over at Susie and saw her grinning.
“Susie?”
She laughed.
“Go. I can handle the shop. It’ll give me time to think, you know.”
“Then consider me gone.” I hurried over to her and hugged her tight. “Think good thoughts, Susie. I love you.”
