Spencer pulled out his pad and made some notes. “Did they have a special place? A certain campground?”
“Yes, they always went to Bristlecone. Do you think he could be there? It’s at least ten miles away. I don’t know how he’d have gotten there.”
“He had a long head start, but ten miles is quite a distance on foot. I’ll have Dispatch contact the Colorado State Patrol.”
“Maybe I should drive out there—”
“I think it’s best if you stay here. He might have hidden somewhere, and now that it’s dark, he’ll come home. If he does, you’ll want to be here. I know it’s hard, but try to be positive. We’ll find your son.”
Staying put and doing nothing was the last thing Dawn wanted, but Spencer had a point. If Chase came home on his own, she’d want to be there to hold him and make sure he was okay.
“I hope you’re right.”
“Me, too. I’m going to head over to the Barlows’ house. If you think of anything else, here’s my number. Or you can call the station.” Spencer handed her a business card with his name, badge number, and a cell number.
“Thank you. Will you let me know what Joey says?”
“It’s an official investigation. But I’ll contact you when I have an update.”
Dawn understood, but it didn’t mean she was happy about it. After she followed Spencer to the door and watched him pull away in his patrol car, she went upstairs to see Cindy and Janey.
