He jerked up his chin.
Ten minutes later, after the doctor huffed about Ophelia leaving her room, they gave her the all-clear, but that she had a mild concussion, bruising, and whiplash.
My little princess, however, had thrown her arm out to stop herself and had broken it.
They were in the process of wrapping it in a dark brown cast. When the doctor asked her why, she said, “Same color as my Saint’s eyes.”
And that... well... I had to bury my face in Ophelia’s neck to conceal a tear that ran out from the corner of my eye.
Nuke came back and told me.
I asked, “Where’s the son of a bitch?”
My woman took in the people around us and started to whisper, “Saint...”
I looked down at her and said, “Love, I need to know where he is.”
When her eyes looked deeply into mine, she nodded, “Okay.” Then she whispered, “Be careful.”
Oh, I was careful after I left a few brothers to keep watch over them.
Kettle, however, wouldn’t be left behind.
So, I got it when he slammed his fist into the fucker’s face. Then he growled and stalked out of the room.
That was when I got in the fucker’s face and sneered, “You almost took away my reasons for living, now, I’m going to take you out.”
Merlin had told us ways, years ago, how to commit murder and get away with it.
I was using one of those methods now.
And that night, after we had all gotten home, I was placing a pillow underneath Soraya’s arm before I settled in to read her a story, something we had started the night after they had moved in when she asked, “Saint?”
I lowered my frame onto her bed and asked, “Yes, princess?”
“Will you marry my Monnie?” she asked.
I had thought about it.
I can’t tell you how many times I have thought about it.
Some might think we’re crazy, but when you know... you know.
Therefore, I asked, “One day. I do plan to ask her. Would that be okay with you?”
“Will I’s become your daughter?” she asked.
I nodded, “Yeah. If you want that.”
That was when my little princess said, “My daddy never tucked me in. He never read me a bedtime story. He never held me. You do all of that. So yes. It’s okay with me. Long as I get you, too.”
I wished with all my might I had hit that fucker harder.
Maybe one day...
One could fucking hope.
‘Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be amazing.’
