“I’m probably just being paranoid because of everything that’s happened,” I said. But even as the words came out of my mouth, a chill ran down my spine, and the hairs on the back of my neck rose up again. I felt eyes on me. They seemed to be staring at me from every direction.
My phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket, making me jump. As soon as I realized what it was, I laughed with relief and pulled it out to check my notifications.
My blood froze in my veins as I looked at the screen, and the laughter dried up in my throat. “Nate,” I whispered. “Look.”
It was another message from ‘Unknown Sender’.
My, my… looks like someone’s been a naughty girl. Didn’t I warn you about digging?
This time you’re done, Alexis.
Nate’s gaze flitted around the park again. “He knows we’re here,” he muttered.
“I know. But how?”
He shook his head, lips set in a grim line. “No idea, but we should get out of here. It’s getting dark, anyway. We won’t find anything like this.”
I shoved my phone back in my pocket and took another look around us. I still couldn’t see anyone lingering behind the nearby bushes or trees, but it was hard to tell with so many shadows everywhere.
“I feel like I’m just waiting around to be stabbed again,” I said. “It’s horrible.”
“I know,” Nate said, pulling me close to him. “I wish we could just draw this fucking asshole out of hiding so we could get him once and for all.”
A lightbulb seemed to click on inside my head as his words struck me. I drew back, brows shooting up.
“What’s up?” Nate asked, forehead creasing with concern.
I smiled thinly. “You just gave me an idea.”
