“Hey, baby.” I could hear her smile through the phone.
“Hey, Mama.”
“To what do I owe this call, because most days I won’t hear from you?” She reminded me of my absence as of late.
“Well, I went to break the news to Bash, and I ended up getting something dumped on me.” I shook my head, wondering if I should’ve told her to brace herself for that one. I mean, Joseph was her very married son.
“What? Did he put his hands on you, because I wi?—”
“No. It’s morewhohe was doing.” I rolled my eyes to the ceiling of the car. “Mama, take a seat. It’s something I need to tell you.”
“Girl, what is i?—”
“I walked in on Sabastian fucking Joseph.” I covered my mouth and attempted to whisper into the phone.
I could hear her gasp over the phone and what sounded like the phone fall. Then it sounded like she had picked it up. “Lane, are you su?—”
“Yeah, Mama, it was Joseph and Bash. I couldn’t believe it either.” I shook my head as if she could see me. At that point, I felt bad for Joseph’s wife, Nina. She was sweet and really loved him.
“I’m stunned but not surprised,” she slowly spoke. “A mother knows her child, but Bash, I am very surprised about. What did you do?” she asked.
“Of course I laughed, but I left them to their business. I’m glad things didn’t have to end messy though.” I shrugged it off as my car pulled up in front of Regancy’s building. “I’ll see you soon, Mama.”
“I love you, Lane. You’re really okay though, right?” She sounded concerned.
“Yes, Mom. I’m fine, and I love you too,” I reassured her as I exited the car. Once I hung up with her, I continued into Regancy’s building and onto the elevator. I couldn’t help but shake my head at the idea of what I’d just seen. I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn’t realize I was on her floor. I blinked a few times, dragging myself off the elevator in the direction of her condo. When I reached her door, I knocked.
“Who is it?” I heard Kale’s voice on the other side of the door.
“Your godmother.”
Before I could say anything else, the door opened, and Kale rushed into my space, hugging my waist. I had been meaning to spend some time with my godchild, but I’d been so busy, and any free time that I had was spent with Taurus.
“Kale, what did I tell you abou—” Regancy started fussing before her eyes met me.
“She asked who it was before she opened the door, so don’t start yo’ stuff.” I took up for her as I always did.
Regancy shook her head before walking over to her stove. It smelled like she was cooking, which meant I was right on time.
“What are you cooking?” I questioned.
“Chicken noodle soup.” She stirred the pot before looking at me finally. “Now, what did you have to tell me?”
I looked down at Kale, who was now playing with her little potbelly puppy.
“Kale, baby, take Bernard to your bedroom. I’ll call you when dinner is done.” Regancy looked over at her.
“Okay, Mama. Bernard is sleepy anyway.” She picked up the puppy and walked to her bedroom.
“Now why the hell did she name that dog Bernard?” I asked.
Regancy laughed. “The hell if I know, but spill the beans.”
I laughed and shook my head as I watched her turn to her cabinet. “So I was going to break things off with Bash when I walked in on him and?—”
“Another woman?” Regancy gasped as she poured the wine.
I shook my head. “With Joseph.”
