Chapter Twenty-Four

Alaric

S he’s here. I can feel her, the bond fluttering inside me like a butterfly. As soon as she stepped onto my land, I knew she was coming for me, her presence getting closer until she stepped into the palace.

A raw, animalistic cry rips from my chest as I fight against my chains. I must get to her, my mate needs me, but my bindings don’t budge. Being so close to her while not being able to get to her is torture, pain making my back arch.

There is a flurry of activity by the door, where one of my father’s guards talks to those who keep me captive. They glance over at me as they speak. I’ve long since stopped listening to the guards, so now their words sound foreign to me. The atmosphere in the room shifts, the sharp tang of fear filling the air. Something is happening.

I don’t care what they have planned, but I might be able to use their distraction to escape and get to her. I need her. I know I have a limited amount of time where I can still hold on to the little sanity I have left.

I can feel her right above me, her bond flaring as if reaching for me.

I’m here, Iris. I’m coming.
