“Why?”
“That is how we find if itcanbe broken. Claire went home. I’m going to be awhile.”
“It’s already six on a Friday.”
“And you’re free to leave,” I said.
“I’m not leaving without you.”
“Nah, go,” I said. “If you stay, I’ll be distracted and… that won’t help anyone.”
“You don’t need anything?”
I needed a million things. I was exhausted, frustrated, and simultaneously willing to jump his bones—not here, but somewhere.
“I don’t need food. I will grab something on my way home.”
“Eva, come on. You can do this?—”
“If my team is still here, I am,” I said. “You can grasp that, David.”
He backed off. “Okay. But, you get to take a break. Have dinner with me at least?”
He sat on my desk, puppy dog eyes begging for guidance. He wanted me to call him a good boy and give him a chore.
I shook my head. “No. That’s not it. And people?—”
“The whole floor is gone, Eva. I can grab food. What do you want? What does your heart desire after the longest day?”
“You want me to go home,” I sighed. “I want that, too, but I doubt it will happen before midnight. There are days like this, David. I’ll call the car.”
“I want you home—in bed, in compromising positions,” Davey growled, voice low.
I bit my lip.
“You want the same. Come home. Can’t we?—”
“Any amount of downtime on a Saturday costs us revenue. The linen sale is upcoming. We do not want to crash because we cannot support the traffic. What we’ve given everyone is a workaround thatshouldstabilize things—in theory. I need to ensure the testers, and I can confirm it works.”
He groaned, standing and throwing hands up. “Eva, throw me a damn bone!”
“Davey, you’re killing me. The only way you’re going to getwhat you want is to order delivery and take me in the supply closet,” I laughed. “That isn’t happening.”
“No one would care.”
“David!”
“No one is here, Eva.”
“Okay, I want food from that Persian hole in the wall on Randolph,” I said. “Order it. You get fifteen minutes, and we need to make it look somewhat credible. So, close your windows and let’s just do it on your couch.”
He did a double-take. “Are you fucking serious?”
“Sure, why not. I’m desperate. I missed whatwouldhave been a good time this morning. Why not. If you’re willing to do the order and go down on me, I’ll fuck you.”
“You’re adding more to this list, Eva.”
“You love when I’m demanding,” I said.
