As we’re escorted to the table, I inform Angie, “There’s nothing to worry about. Tonight’s nothing more complicated than this.”

And I might be hearing things, but after I seat her, I could swear she says, “Oh, yes there is.”

Dinner was delicious. Conversation between me and Ward was as lively as the guitar player who stopped at our table. I opened up, telling him small things about me. Like Flower.

“So, you’re saying this cat is a threat to your electronic devices?”

“Not just mine. Anyone’s. I’m debating a seance or an exorcism.”

“Have you wondered if she’s just lonely and looking for attention?”

I pretend to give it some thought. “I’ve wondered if she’s a descendant of the competitor’s brand,” I declare resolutely.

Ward and I share a grin before digging in to our own dishes.

“You talk about your grandparents but not your parents. Are they no longer with you?”

I sip some tea before answering. “I don’t have parents. Not anymore.”

“Are they part of the cause…”

“They were part of the effect. They chose to betray me rather than stand by me.”

Ward’s eyes frost over. “I would consider that complacent.”

I place my fork down, my appetite gone. “No, you shouldn’t.”

He holds up his hands, palms up. “Angie, I have to trust you in this situation. I don’t want to take the wrong step, make the wrong decision, and harm us.”

“What us is there, Ward?”

“I don’t know. But I’m curious about the one there could be. Aren’t you?”

“I’m tired.” The words pop out before I can stop them.

“Of what?”

“Of giving the past the power. I feel…” I glance away to gather my thoughts. Ward doesn’t say anything. “My emotions are coming back so fast after being locked away for so long, I feel like I’m speed dating myself. One minute, I’m dating laughter, the next fear. Frustration, sarcasm. And then when I add you to the mix, I get confused.”Terrified.

“Then don’t add me.” His voice is soft.

“I…what?” Did he say what I think he said?

“I promised we’d start this off as friends, Angie. I promised I’dbeyour friend. And if it takes a week, a month, or a year, I’m going to show you I can be the friend you need.” He pulls out his phone and sends a quick text. Then Ward stands and takes my hand.

I place mine in it. “What’s happening?”

“What’s happening is it’s late. And it’s time for you to go home.” He drags a single finger along my temple, getting it tangled in a loose lock of my hair. He lifts it to his lips before letting it drop and stepping back. “Go, Hayden’s outside waiting to take you home. I’ll see you at work tomorrow.”
