B ack at the barn where they’d left their vehicles, a surprise was waiting.

“Dad?” Patrick let out.

Samson stood in front of an ambulance that belonged to Scanguards. He hadn’t come alone. Maya was inside the ambulance, and Gabriel was already wheeling a gurney toward him. Fallon was still in his arms, but she was conscious. Acknowledging Gabriel with a nod, he placed Fallon on the gurney.

“Our doctor will take care of you now,” he assured her.

“Buffy?” she asked.

“No, Maya. You can trust her. She’ll give you something for the pain.” He looked up. “Gabriel, tell Maya to give her some morphine.”

He knew she would be in good hands. He’d done what he could, starting the healing process with his blood. Maya would take care of the rest.

Gabriel rolled her to the ambulance, and Patrick looked at his father again. He bridged the distance between them with a few steps.

“You should have asked us to come home,” Samson said.

“Who blabbed?”

“I wouldn’t call it blabbing. And it doesn’t matter who called me.” He sighed. “Gabriel and I could have helped.”

“I know, but you know Mom doesn’t like it when you put yourself in danger.”

“And you think she likes it any better when you do the same?” He shook his head. “You were lucky tonight.”

“I know that. But we were prepared.”

“Next time, call me.”

“Alright.”

Samson pulled him into a hug. “I’m so happy everybody is alright. Wanna introduce me to your future mate?”

“You know about that too, huh?”

Samson released him from his embrace. “Nothing stays a secret very long at Scanguards. You should know that.”

Patrick shook his head, chuckling. “Come on then. I’ll introduce you to Fallon.”

They walked toward the ambulance. Gabriel stood outside, handing out human blood to those vampires who were injured. The ones who were blood-bonded to a human or a vampire hybrid received bottled blood that had been drawn from their blood-bonded mates earlier, poured into bottles, and labeled with the receiving vampire’s name. It was standard procedure to collect blood from the blood-bonded mates before a dangerous mission so that any injured vampires could be healed swiftly.

Patrick hopped into the back of the ambulance, where Maya was taking care of Fallon. Samson followed him.

“Fallon, baby,” he said softly and took her hand.

“Patrick,” she whispered, her voice weak.

“How are you feeling?”

She forced a smile. “Better.”

He locked eyes with Maya.

“I gave her morphine for the pain.”

“Thank you, Maya.” Then he looked at Fallon again. “I want you to meet my father, Samson.”

Samson leaned over her, so she didn’t have to lift her head. “Hi, Fallon. I’m very happy that you’ll soon be part of our family.”

“Thank you, Mr. Woodford.”

“Please call me Samson,” he offered. “My wife is eager to meet you too. So, get well soon, okay?”

She smiled back at him. “Yes. Thank you.”

When Samson left the ambulance, Maya said, “Patrick, you wanna lick her neck wound now? I’ve cleaned it. I wanna avoid having to sew it up.”

“Definitely,” he agreed and leaned over Fallon. “Baby, I’m gonna lick your wound. It will help close it so that you won’t have any scars later.”

“Thank you.”

He shook his head. “I have to thank you. Without you, I’d be dead now. You saved my life.”

He brought his mouth to her wound, noticing that it was already starting to heal from the inside. His blood was doing this. Now his saliva would help the process. The scent of her sweet blood engulfed him, and he licked over the tender flesh, licking up the blood that was still seeping from it. He deposited his saliva over the wound, making sure to cover every part of her damaged skin. When he swallowed the blood, he felt arousal charging through him.

“I’ll take care of the other injured,” he heard Maya say.

He appreciated her giving them privacy for this intimate moment. The shock of what had happened still sat deep in his bones. He couldn’t imagine continuing his life without Fallon. He lifted his head to look at her and realized that his vision was blurry. It took him a couple of seconds to understand why. Tears were running down his cheeks.

“I almost lost you,” he murmured. “I couldn’t shake that other werewolf. He was too strong. It took two of us to subdue him. I tried to get to you. I tried to help you, but I couldn’t get there in time. If that werewolf, Jude, hadn’t come…”

“Shhhhh.” She pressed a finger to his lips to stop him from speaking. Tears shimmered in her eyes. “I know you wanted to help me. I know you would give your life for mine, just like I would give mine for yours. We’re both okay now.”

He sank his lips onto hers and kissed her, their tears mingling, the shock of what had nearly happened slowly dissipating. Fallon was finally safe.
