Willa

My head is spinning from everything Roman has just said to me, but I haven’t felt the baby move like this before.

“I’m sorry,” I manage to say, refocusing on Roman. He’s pushing away from the table. “You were saying really nice things. Go on.”

“Fuck all of that,” he growls, dropping to his knees beside me. He turns my chair as if it—with pregnant me on top of it—weighs nothing, and he hovers his hands over my belly. “May I?”

I nod, giddy. “I don’t know if you’ll feel it, too, but I think Baby is here…” I take his hand and press it against the side of my belly.

“What does it feel like?” he asks quietly, looking up at me.

“This was a definite kick and a roll. It was incredible. I’ve felt some fluttering before, but nothing like this.” I tremble. “There was some fluttering earlier, too. While you were cooking. I thought it was just butterflies because you were flirting with me.”

“Was I?” He grins. “I’m teasing. I definitely was. Maybe Baby likes the flirting.”

I hold my breath, but there’s nothing.

Roman doesn’t move, though.

Stillness falls around us as we both wait.

And then there’s a roll again, a floopy wave of sensation on the inside.

“Wait,” I whisper.

I grab his hand and try to guess where it might happen next. I slide his touch lower, to cradle the bottom of my tummy, and it’s a good guess.

He gets a hard thump right against the palm of his hand, and his whole face lights up. “Holy fuck.”

“Yeah,” I breathe.

“Hi Baby,” he murmurs, ducking his head low to press right against my belly. “I’m your dad. You’re going to have to work with me to convince your mom that I’m not going to go anywhere, okay?”

Hot, happy tears pop behind my eyelids.

Okay, I want to say.

But I suddenly can’t say anything at all, the lump in my throat is too big.
