Fuck.

“Ignore that I just said that.”

“That’s hard to do,” Willa says carefully. “I said I didn’t want to move in with you, so your answer is to install me here, and then move in with me? You don’t even want to live in this apartment!”

“I didn’t say that.”

She frowns. “But I asked why you don’t live here?”

“And I didn’t get a chance to answer.” I lean in and take her hand.

Her fingers are so small compared to mine.

“The night we met…that was the first time I’d been up here.

I only acquired the company the month before, and I’m a busy man.

A penthouse wasn’t important to me. It’s not the kind of thing I put in my own buildings. There isn’t one across the street.

“But that night made this apartment very important to me. In the days that followed, I tried to spend time here. I wanted to be here, all the time, but…it was too hard. I know you don’t want to hear this, but it felt like I met my soulmate that night.

“I don’t fucking believe in that shit. I don’t want to be consumed by feelings like that.

But fate didn’t seem to care about my preferences, because I fell for you, Willa.

I fell so fucking hard. And I both wanted to be in the space where that happened, and couldn’t be in this space, at the same time.

“So as far as this apartment goes…yes, I like it. A lot. So fucking much, in fact. Filling it with groceries for you made me happy. Cooking for you in it makes me happy. Seeing you roll your eyes at how fancy it is makes me happy. And if you need some distance, I understand, but I’ll be leaving my heart here with you when I go.

And I’ll be back at the earliest opportunity. ”

She stares at me.

And then she jerks back in her chair. “Oh.”

“Oh?”

Her eyes flare wide, a delighted expression flashing across her face. “Um, I think the baby is moving.”
