“Do I have to keep guessing or are you going to tell me?”
“I think Rob is cheating on me.”
The words were out of her mouth before Melanie had time to think of a better, perhaps more tactful, way of saying it.
Melanie didn’t know how she expected Cameron to react, but her almost lack of reaction caught Melanie off guard.
“Well, I can’t say I’m not surprised.”
“What does that mean?” Melanie could hear the defensiveness in her tone.
“Mel,” Cameron nervously laughed, “come on.”
She seemed to wait for Melanie to catch up to what she wasn’t saying. And although Melanie knew what Cameron meant, she pretended she didn’t.
“What come on ? What do you mean? Why aren’t you more surprised at this?”
“Because you and Rob haven’t been happy in a while . You’ve told me that several times before, remember?” Cameron didn’t wait for a response. “And, I’m sorry, but no person in their right mind goes two years without having sex with you. I know I wouldn’t.”
Under normal circumstances, Melanie would have just breezed past Cameron’s comment as a silly little friend joke. But there was something different in the air between them.
And in Cameron’s blue eyes.
“What—what do you mean by that?”
Cameron seemed to realize what she’d said as a momentarily scared look flashed across her face. It was quickly replaced by a smile, the one Melanie knew Cameron had when she was trying to fake it.
“I’m just saying you’re a catch and Rob is an idiot if he’s cheating on you. Which, by the way, how did you find out?”
“I saw her contact photo on his phone. It was of him kissing her cheek.”
“Shit.”
“Yup.” Leaning toward the coffee table, Melanie picked up the bottle of wine and refilled their glasses. “Is it bad that I’m not surprised? That’s bad, right? This isn’t how a wife should react when she finds another woman’s picture on her husband’s phone, is it?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never had a husband’s phone to look at.” Cameron’s smirk made Melanie feel slightly more at ease.
She felt better having told Cameron about her suspicions.
Although Melanie hadn’t planned on telling anyone until she had more concrete details, she also didn’t know what more she’d need to convince herself that Rob was cheating on her.
And even if he wasn’t having sex with Janet, the mere fact he was snowboarding with and kissing other women meant their marriage was past being over.
Great. I failed at that too.
Melanie kept that thought to herself as she and Cameron stalked Rob’s new whatever on social media. They snuggled on the couch under the same blanket as Cameron scrolled on her laptop sitting in her lap.
“She’s not even that pretty.”
“Yes, she is,” Melanie sighed, resting her head on Cameron’s shoulder. “She’s his type. Athletic. Pretty. Brunette.”
“She’s nowhere near as pretty as you.”
Cameron’s words hung in the air between them as they slowly turned to face each other.
There was something in Cameron’s eyes that Melanie hadn’t seen there before.
She couldn’t pinpoint it in the dimly lit room, but the look equal parts scared her and excited her.
Because the look in Cameron’s eyes wasn’t one just friends gave to each other.
Slowly, Melanie leaned in toward Cameron. Cameron did the same, their heads tilting as their lips were just about to touch.
“Mom?” Jonah’s voice echoing down the stairs sent them pulling apart as if they were teenagers getting caught. Cameron’s head snapped toward the stairs; a hint of fear in her eyes that they had been caught almost kissing. “Do you have any extra toothpaste?”
“Top drawer on the left,” Cameron called back.
“Thanks!”
As Cameron slowly turned back to Melanie, a look of relief appeared on her face. “Well, I haven’t had that kind of panic since I was his age.”
“Me either,” Melanie nervously laughed. They both sat in silence, staring at each other as if they were unsure they should try a kiss again or forget it ever happened.
Melanie had no idea what to do. On one hand, she desperately wanted to kiss Cameron.
She wanted to know what she tasted like; what it would feel like to kiss someone who wanted to kiss you back.
But on the other hand, she was still married to Rob.
If she kissed Cameron, she wouldn’t be any better than him cheating on her.
If he is even cheating on me.
She shook her head slowly, pinching the bridge of her nose.
It doesn’t matter. It’s time you faced the music and admit your marriage is over.
Hot tears nipped at Melanie’s eyes as she stood up from the couch.
“I should go.”
“Mel, wait.” Cameron stood up and followed her as she walked toward the front door. “Don’t leave like this. Please. I’m sorry if I did something I shouldn’t have. I thought you were feeling it too and—”
Melanie kissed her then. Full on lips together, Cameron’s back against the wall kissed her.
Her head was spinning as Cameron slowly wrapped her arms around her and pulled her closer as she gently pushed her against the wall.
She was sure she could stay there forever had it not been for the sound of footsteps on the stairs.
“Mom?” Dylan’s voice came from the stairs.
“I’ll see you later.” Melanie quickly grabbed her bag and headed toward the door. But Cameron grabbed her hand.
“Don’t leave.”
“I have to. I’m sorry.”
Without another word, Melanie pulled the door shut behind her. She touched her lips with her fingertips, smiling at the memory of the kiss she knew would stay with her like a tattoo.
