Melanie knew that was Vera’s standard line with patients when she needed to give them a minute to digest the news she’d given them. But Melanie was thankful for the time alone with Cameron. Cameron didn’t rush her to talk or say anything. She simply held Melanie until she was ready to talk.
“I’m sorry.”
“You have nothing to be sorry for, Mel. I can’t imagine how you feel right now.”
“I honestly think seeing Rob anywhere else would have been easier than this.” She sat up so she could see Cameron. “But knowing he got Janet pregnant hit me like a ton of bricks.”
“I can’t imagine. I’m so sorry, Mel. You and Rob have so much history that I understand why you’re so upset.”
“It’s not that I want a baby with him now.”
“I know, honey.”
“It’s just that he and I wasted so long not being happy in our marriage that I think about how much better off we would have been if we had divorced sooner. You and I could have been together sooner.”
“Maybe, but you never know.” Cameron’s comment surprised Melanie. “Timing had a lot to do with it. Who’s to say you would have fallen madly in love with me then the way you have now?”
“I’d fall in love with you in any timeline.”
“Back at ya.”
“Thank you for understanding my crazy brain.”
“Crazy beautiful brain.” Cameron kissed her forehead then framed her face with her hands. “I love you, Melanie. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this today. I know you’re tired from working so many days in a row and this is the last thing you needed today.”
“I just don’t know why he didn’t just tell me.
Did he think I would get mad? We’re divorced.
I might not have been happy for him but I wouldn’t have been mad.
And did he know before we got divorced? He had to, right?
I mean we signed the papers in December.
If she’s having a baby now, she would have been, what?
Twenty weeks? Cam,” Melanie borderline whined, “he had to have known.”
Cameron stayed quiet for a moment as Melanie watched the pain flicker in her eyes. “I don’t know, Mel. I wish I did. And I wish I knew what to say to make this better but I don’t. All I know is that I love you and all your emotions and feelings about this are completely valid.”
“That’s what Vera said.”
“Because we’re both right.” Putting her arm around her shoulder, Cameron pulled Melanie close to her again. “For the record, I probably would have confronted him so you’re a better person than me.”
Melanie snorted a laugh. “Honestly, I have no idea what I’d say to him right now. I guess it’s a good thing I’m off the next few days so they should be gone by the time I’m back at work.”
“Very true.” They sat in silence for a moment as Melanie felt herself calming down. Cameron’s presence had a way of doing that to her. “You know what I’m going to do for you tonight? I’m going to make your favorite dinner and have a bottle of wine waiting for you when you get home.”
Melanie’s mind lingered on the word home. She’d begun to see Cameron’s house as her home the last few months and knew soon it would be her official home.
Before Melanie could tell her that, the door to the office opened again.
Vera had three bottles of Powerade and handed one to each of them.
Melanie noted how her cap was already loosened undoubtedly by Vera as a subtle way to show she cared about her.
Pulling up a chair to the couch, Vera put her hand on Melanie’s knee.
“I got the rest of your shift covered, okay?”
“Vera, no, you don’t have to do that.”
“I know, but I did.” Vera winked at her. “Gotta take care of my favorite nurse.”
Melanie didn’t know how she got so lucky to have two of the best people in the world in her life.
Both Vera and Cameron meant the world to her and Melanie knew they would always have her back.
After saying goodbye to Vera, Cameron walked Melanie out to her car.
They hugged for a long time before Cameron had to get back to work.
“Text me when you get home, okay?”
“I will. Would it be okay if I picked the kids up from school today?”
Cameron looked shocked by her question but it quickly faded to love. “Of course. I know they’d love that.”
“Thanks. I’ll see you tonight.”
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
After another round of kisses, Melanie got into her car and headed home.
She didn’t even change out of her scrubs as she collapsed onto the bed.
Hank and Lucy cuddled up with her, clearly understanding something was wrong.
Picking up her phone, Melanie hopped on social media to check out Rob’s profile.
Although she hadn’t been on the app in months, Rob and Janet were still in her recent searches. She clicked on Rob’s profile first and was surprisingly not shocked when she saw he had unfriended her and put his account to private.
“Bastard,” she mumbled to herself as she clicked over to Janet’s profile. Her profile picture was of her and Rob, but Melanie didn’t dare zoom in on it. Not when even the small picture showed Rob’s hand on her round belly. “Fucking bastard.”
Hot tears rolled down Melanie’s face as she quickly clicked buttons in order to delete her account. As she sat the phone down on the nightstand, she felt as if she had finally closed the book officially on her and Rob’s relationship.
About time.
Maybe seeing Rob and Janet at the hospital was what Melanie needed to fully move on from that part of her life. Feeling a relief she hadn’t felt before, Melanie drifted off to sleep.
