These people might come off as resistance, as working within Dominatus to take it down, but what if they weren’t?

They could be lying. What if they were the same people who’d held her captive?

Targeted her. Making the right move here didn’t just affect her.

Her friends had been caught in the crossfire.

Jax’s family. All of them were vulnerable because Kenna had found out things about her past that her parents never had any intention of telling her.

Her dad, the man who’d raised her to be an investigator.

Her birth mother, or the woman she had believed gave birth to her.

Only one was alive now, and she hadn’t seen Amara in weeks.

Had no idea where she was or what she was currently doing to take down this evil group.

She’d been helping Kenna’s sister, who was more like her cousin, recover from being held captive by the same people.

Zeyla had been used as an organ donor, and last Kenna had heard, it was slow going with her recovery.

Kenna’s parents had long ago agreed to raise her away from everything that she had invited back into her life—or which had been thrust back upon her. Whatever they’d wanted for her life, it hadn’t happened.

But the point was that she got to choose. Her road was hers to travel.

Ms. Romeo nodded. “All we ask is that you consider it.”

Ms. Potter said, “As you can probably imagine, our firm is committed to seeing justice for our client. No matter how long that takes.”

“I’m sure you are.” Kenna wasn’t going to commit to them or refuse them on the first pass, despite what Bruce had said.

Instead, she would turn all this over to Maizie, her tech whiz, and see what she came up with.

They needed to do a deep dive on the law firm and each of these lawyers, who she’d have immediately pegged as assets for the resistance, double agents inside Dominatus .

Problem was, they could just as easily be real agents, not the ones actively trying to undermine the master plan, making them very much a threat.

Not just to Kenna’s happily ever after.

Trying to figure out where their allegiance lay made her exhausted.

“Do you know what he did to me?” She motioned to the file. “This doctor.”

Ms. Romeo shook her head. “I’m sorry, we don’t. Right now, we don’t even know where to find him.”

So, showing Kenna the file had been a long shot. A way to find out if they had the right guy—if Kenna would have a personal reason to want to nail this guy.

They’d come here on a gamble. Because of Bruce?

Either way, it paid off because she had recognized him right away.

Bruce was more closely connected to the resistance than Kenna.

After all, he’d worked with them off and on over the past few years since the CIA had burned him.

If she had to guess, he’d sought out her mother Amara and gone after her romantically.

According to him, they’d had a moment back a few months ago .

But it was better not to get involved in Bruce’s personal life if she could help it.

He might know these women, even though he’d said he hadn’t asked whether they were resistance. He was absolutely the kind of guy who went for plausible deniability.

She shook their hands again, careful not to squeeze too hard. As soon as they were out of earshot, making their way to a car that pulled up to the curb, she turned to Bruce. “How did they contact you?”

“I found them. Did some research on people actively trying to hit back at Dominatus , even if they don’t realize that’s what they’re doing.

They popped on my radar after their witness gal disappeared.

” He cleared his throat. “Someone found her, by the way. I had Ramon make a trip to Palm Springs last week. The cops there found her in pieces in a landfill. DNA was a match to what the law firm had on file, but they’d taken out her teeth and cut off her fingers and ears. ”

“Trying to hinder the police from IDing her?”

He nodded. “Cops didn’t know the law firm had a record of her DNA.”

“Does the law firm know you accessed their records?”

His lips curled up into a smile that lit his eyes. “Their security system was a challenge. Ramon didn’t think I could do it.”

Kenna let out a long sigh. “Did you find anything in there that I should know about?”

“We only got what we were looking for. We didn’t invade their privacy or anything.” He shrugged. “I’ll send the file to Maizie. You’ve got groceries to buy, right?”

“This conversation isn’t done.” He’d kept far too much from her. While she wasn’t the kind of boss who micromanaged the people under her, she expected them to at least fill her in on what they were working on.

“I expect nothing less.” He actually gave her a little bow. “Have a good night.”

She watched him walk away with the file, which, she had to admit, did mean it would be uploaded to Maizie faster than Kenna could do it. Having other people help her out was…helpful. Okay, she was tired. It might only be two in the afternoon, but she was fully done for the day.

Whatever was wrong with her…it sucked.

She was so far past drained she couldn’t think straight but managed to haul herself around the store and get a few things. As much as she would be able to carry from the car into the house.

Kenna wrestled it in the trunk of her car, and thankfully, the grocery store was barely ten minutes from the town house. She slid into her driver’s seat, thinking how great it was going to feel to crawl into bed and take a nap.

Someone walked in front of the car. Probably her mind coming up with an odd apparition because of her fatigue.

The person had on white scrubs and an odd, almost porcelain mask.

She flinched. The nightmare image affected her to her core.

This was not the kind of person she wanted to meet in real life, or even in her dreams.

Something sharp touched her neck. She gasped and reached for it, but her hand never made it that far.

Everything went black.
