“I’ve got you, princess. I won’t let her hurt you again. I promise.”
I bury my head back into his chest, not caring the least bit about the audience of at least ten people watching me have a mental breakdown. “With all due respect, sir, I’m not leaving Devin. I know it’s hard for you to believe, considering this mess I’ve caused, but I love your daughter, and I’m not letting her out of my sight until this woman is behind bars. If you’d like, I have a spare bedroom that you and Mrs. Miller are welcome to if it would make you feel more comfortable.”
Turning my head, I take in my father as he sighs in defeat. “While I appreciate it, that won’t be necessary. I’m not happy with this arrangement at all, but the last thing I want to do is cause you more stress, sweetheart.” He looks over at Mark. “You sure you’re going to be able to call in enough favors for someone to be outside until this is over?”
Mark nods. “I’m positive.”
Dad looks back to Sebastian. “I’m counting on you guys not to let anything bad happen to my baby girl.”
The detectives excuse themselves after that and promise to call as soon as they have any more information.
“Miller, Sanders, we’ll be in touch.” The men nod at my brother and Lance and see themselves out.
“Mom, Dad.” Mark turns to my parents. “Why don’t you let me walk you out?”
My parents hug me goodbye and make me promise to call them several times a day to assure them I’m okay. Their goodbye to Sebastian is much stiffer. “Take care of my daughter.” My father’s voice is hard and unforgiving before he follows Mark to the elevators.
Sebastian and I stand staring at the closed door. A silence hangs over us as we process all the things leading up to this moment, and I’ve never been more grateful to be here with Sebastian despite the immense fear growing inside me.
“I’m really scared,” I admit.
“It’s going to be okay, Devin. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
I know he’ll do everything in his power not to let anything happen to me or to himself, but not everything is within his control.
