Miles: Watching you walk away from me fucking sucked, Hendrix. I meant it when I told you I loved you and I mean it now. I love you. I’m in love with you. And that’s…I don’t know. I’ll be here when you are ready to talk to me.
Miles: I won’t push
Miles: Okay, sorry. I’m done.
Miles: I love you.
I cursed under my breath and let the phone screen go black.
“Hey, Henny,” Wesley called through the door.
“What’s up?”
“Don’t forget to get your phone fixed while we’re out.”
“You’re a jerk.” I scrubbed a hand down my face and got my shit together. Clean socks and phone in hand, I headed toward the living room where Wesley was waiting, ready to go.
“Aren’t you jetlagged?” I asked him.
“High on life.”
“I still wish you would have let me know you were coming.” I put on my socks and laced up my sneakers, then gestured to the front door. “Let’s get out of here.”
Wes followed me to the driveway, the car still unlocked from when I’d gotten home and ran straight to Miles’s house. My frantic banging on his front door had given me my first proper introduction to his roommate, Grayson, which was something else Miles and I would probably have to talk about when we sat down together again.
If we sat down together again.
No.
When.
“I want to know about California life,” Wes said, unrolling the window as I backed out of the drive. “But I also really want to know why you’re so worried about your neighbor. He’s cute by the way. I saw him earlier.”
“Which one?”
“There’s two?”
I nodded, tired.
“The one with short hair.”
“Grayson,” I muttered.
Grayson, who had accused me of cheating on his best friend as soon as he opened the door. Grayson, who’d told me he warned Miles about dating someonelike mebut that Miles hadn’t listened to him. Grayson, who just absolutelyknewthis had to be because I’d let Miles bareback me. Grayson with his ridiculously antiquated views and his fierce protective streak.
Grayson, who looked like he’d swallowed his own foot when I told him Wes was my brother, not a conquest. Grayson, who apologized until Miles showed up, full of his own emotions and his own apologies.
“Are you sleeping with him?” Wes asked.
“God, no.”
“The other one, then?”
I nodded again. “It’s complicated. You don’t have to worry about it. Everything will be fine.”
And one way or the other, it would be. I just hadn’t decided which way that was going to go.
“Alright.” Wes sucked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “California then.”
