Murgul rolls his eyes and shakes his head at me before he carefully slips out of my body, watching me for any sign of discomfort.

“Murgul, I’m fine. I promise. How about you explain what just happened while you carry me to the shower, because there is no way I am sleeping covered in both our fluids.”

“That is rather narrow-minded of you, precious one. The fool worked rather hard to cover you in his scent so that all will know who you belong to.”

Yeah, that was definitely Vrog. Now that I know he exists, it’s easy for me to differentiate between the tone and sound of their voices.

Glaring up at them in exasperation, Murgul scoops me off the bed. I take a second to check on my little beasty, where she’s curled up in her nest beside the bed. Thankfully, she seems to be fast asleep—our… activities didn’t disturb her rest. Refocusing my ire on both my mate and Vrog, I haughtily declare.

“I don’t really give a fuck, Vrog. After the shit you pulled, you don’t get a say in anything right now. We are taking a shower tonight, and if you both feel like I need your scent on me to be around others, scent- you may mark me when we wake up tomorrow.”

She really is the perfect mate.

Truth.

I’m not sure if they meant for me to hear their private conversation or not, but warmth fills me at their words. Finally, after years of superficial lies, I’m appreciated for who and what I am. Not just my pretty face.

Snuggling into Murgul’s arms, I can’t keep the silly smile off my face the entire time we’re in the shower before he dries me off and takes me back to bed.

In fact, I’m pretty sure I fall asleep with that same smile etched into my lips.

Chapter Thirty-One

MURGUL

Wake up, fool!

Snapping awake,I do not move, lest I wake Gwendolyn where she is snuggled comfortably against my chest.

What is it, Vrog?

Do not take that aggrieved tone with me! I believe we have arrived back at Deapra. Bikar must have piloted us through the dark cycle at high speed to get back this fast. I am pretty sure a shuttle just landed within the Zenith.

Frack! That means Slavic is most likely on board. This will not be pleasant.

I no more than have that thought when loud voices sound from outside the door leading into the passageway.

“WHAT WERE YOU THINKING, BIKAR!?”

Gwendolyn jerks awake at Slavic’s booming roar and peers up at me with bewildered eyes. “Who the heck is yelling like that?”

Rubbing the back of my neck, I grudgingly reply.

“That would be my eldest sibling, Slavic. He is, apparently, on board the Zenith and most likely just found out what Bikar and I have been up to. I need to go see what is going on.”

I cannot wait to see Bikar get his arse kicked. Do not forget, you promised me that we would pummel him for his duplicity about the Korgon vessel.

That is not something I intend to let slide.

Frowning at the byplay between Vrog and me, Gwendolyn starts to nod, and then her eyes fall to my chest. “Murgul! Your mating collar! I can see it! It’s… beautiful.”

We have never been called beautiful before…

Peering down at myself, I am shocked to see that my once almost invisible mark is now a shimmering gold, the same color as my mate’s shining hair. Awestruck, I trace the mark and to my surprise, I find that the gilded texture is a new set of glistening scales that extends all the way down to my genital slit, encircling it so that all may know my body has been claimed.

Joy ignites. Now, all can see that I am mated, and it fills a void in me that I was unaware existed until this moment. Lifting my head, I look over at my bright one, eager to see how the gods marked her for me. The tic my eyes land on her mating collar, I freeze, the worries of earlier banished.

Did you know it would look like this?
