My hands curl in my lap as I stare at him. “I… I’ve known for a while, actually. But I was so scared to tell you because I was falling for you and you were doing so much for me, but it all hinged on us getting a divorce once everything with my arm and the bakery was finalized, so I was scared it looked like I was trying to trap you with a baby. I didn’t know what to do, and everything was piling up, and all I could see was me losing you, because who wants a surprise baby? We were supposed to be just helping one another and then I was here with a baby and you would hate me and I just?—”
My panicked tirade that comes louder and faster the more I talk ends when Kairo’s mouth crashes against mine and smothers me.
His hand cradles the side of my neck and his mouth covers mine, kissing me hard and deep. Panic spikes in my chest like a blade presses against my skin, and then it starts to fade into a rush of tingles.
“Devon,” Kairo says gently as we break apart. “Breathe.”
I force a deep breath and nod quickly. “Sorry.”
“You’re pregnant.”
“Yup.”
His eyes drift down to my abdomen and a small smile creeps over his lips. “How long have you known?”
“You remember when you dropped me at the doctor?”
He nods.
“I went back for blood tests and they told me. But then Axel called me and everything started to crumble and I was so scared that?—”
I cut myself off as Kairo’s smile grows more amused. “Sorry. I’ve known since then. Do you hate me?”
Kairo can’t contain his smile any longer and he laughs, kissing me again but missing in his eagerness and catching the side of my mouth instead.
“Devon, there’s no world where I could hate you.”
“But I’ve brought so much pain into your life,” I gasp, struggling to keep up with his enthusiasm. “And now I’m just throwing this at you when we’ve never even talked about kids or babies or anything.”
Kairo’s head tilts and his soft gaze locks with mine. “Devon. I love you. Nothing will ever change that. A family with you would be the dream, and I’m only sorry that you were too scared to tell me. I would have listened and been there. If you want to keep it…” His eyes dart down again. “Do you want to keep it?”
I nod instantly.
No other thought had ever crossed my mind. “Yes.”
“Then our duo is becoming a trio. I’m going to be a dad!” A warm flicker of awe fills his eyes and he laughs again. “Oh my God, I’m going to be a dad!”
Cupping his face with both hands, I match his grin and kiss him hard. “I love you, Kairo. So much that it hurts.”
“Then let me soothe it.” Kairo scoops me into his arms, and I squeal in alarm as I land in his lap, wary of his thigh injury.
He doesn’t seem to care, though, as he keeps one arm around my waist and the other cupping the side of my neck with his thumb pressed against my jaw to keep my head up and my lips aligned.
“Kairo,” I gasp against his lips. “Your thigh!”
“Trust me,” he murmurs, sealing his words with another kiss.
I melt into his hold and drape my arms around his shoulders, kissing him just as deeply.
His lips weave gently against my own, kissing my lower lip and then my upper.
When his tongue dips against the seam of my mouth, my heart lifts and I part my lips with a soft moan.
“I love you,” Kairo murmurs. “I love you so fucking much.”
Excitement swells within me and I can scarcely contain it while in his arms.
My body rolls against his and then, after a second, I feel it.
