My bar companion throws back the rest of his drink and slams the glass down, causing me to jump."I should take my ire out on your ass for wasting my time tonight," he says with a leer, "but this is too important.Tell me where to meet you and I'll bring the money. But you better have what I want when I get there."

Wow.He's doing the work for me.I didn't have to weasel him into meeting me somewhere outside of the club.He suggested it all on his own.I should probably be wary this is lining up so seamlessly, but why give Fate ideas with which to screw me over?

Chapter Twenty-Three

Hex

"Iknewitwastoo easy," I mutter to Mason as we duck down behind a row of crates, wood splinters flying around us."At least Kory stayed back at the manor."

Neither of us were thrilled about leaving Kory alone with a legion of demons, but at least they won't harm him.Scare the daylights out of him, but not hurt him.Ravock's roundabout connection to Mason's pack will keep our mate safe because the legion won't go against the word of their Prince.Gotta love paranormal politics.

Peeking around the edge of our makeshift shield, I assess what's going on in front of us.Some of the demons from the legion are going hand-to-hand with the enemy, while my MC brothers are keeping a few combatants distracted so more demons can take them down with powers. My focus is on finding the ring leader of this bunch. If we can bag him, hopefully, the rest will back down.

After a minute, I locate my target in the shadows, creeping toward an exit.Lobbing a blast of power that direction, I knock him off his feet.Unfortunately, he's quick to recover, which makes me wonder what sort of being he is.I haven't gotten close enough to sense him.I can usually stun a shifter for a couple of minutes, but this guy shook off my magic like it was nothing.

"Find a way outside and shift," I tell Mason."If this dude manages to get that door open, you need to force him back inside."I send another blast of power at my target to knock him back.If nothing else, it'll slow him down long enough for Mason to get into position.

Moments after Mason leaves, Ravock shows up beside me.

"What are these guys?"I ask, lobbing another blast of power.

"Nephilim," Ravock replies.

Well, I guess that makes sense.Half-human, half-angel.No wonder they can take a hit.

"Who did you piss off enough to have Nephilim try stealing Morningstar Blood?"

"I didn't do anything, witch. If you recall, your little mouse started all this."

"Don't get pissy with me, Ravock. It seems a bit convenient to have a host of Nephilim come calling on a demon legion. You can't blame me for being suspicious."

"If this was a response to something I did, they wouldn't have sent those human nitwits to try stealing from me.Any Nephilim worth his wings would take me on directly."

"Fine. You're innocent… this time. Now, go take this guy down.Mason is outside the door the dude is trying to get out of in order to cut off his escape path.I'll keep blasting him as a distraction. You come up from behind.I assume you have some way to bind his powers?"

"Just do your job, and I'll worry about mine."

Ugh.Demons.Can't live with them. Can't kill them – these specific ones, at least.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Kory

IfIneverseeanother demon it'll be too soon.At least this nightmare is almost at an end.

I look at the guy from the club, chained to the dungeon wall where Rudy and his sons were previously. There's no sign of them now, and I have no desire to know what happened to them.I don't need that knowledge rattling around in my head and blindsiding me in my dreams.I want this to be done.

"He's one of The Fallen," Ravock says, like that's supposed to mean something.

"The Fallen?"I ask.

"Nephilim mafia, little mouse."

"Okay. But what does that mean in the context of our situation?"

"It means, I need to make a phone call.Elyon has some explaining to do."

Ravock leaves the rest of us in the dungeon with the captured Nephilim.
