Sunday, Mother’s Day, the following year
“I can’t believe you’re having a double wedding with your soon to be mother-in-law,” Marty told him, adjusting his tuxedo. “I can’t believe that you asked me to be your best man.”
“We both decided on small weddings and when we made of the guest list of friends and family most of the parties appeared on both list. Why drag everyone out twice?” Rowan took a sip of champagne.
The reception was in the Garden Room of the Shadowbrook Inn and Marty and Rowan had slipped away to catch up. “I can’t believe Stewart and I have seen you and Chase six times this year. That’s more than I saw you when we lived together.”
Rowan had the grace to look uncomfortable. “Chase makes sure I don’t get too lost in my work that I neglect family and friends. We’ve been out to see Dad and Elena twice and we go for dinner at Edith and John’s twice a month.”
“Busy boy, Chase had done you a world of good. I’ve never see you happier. Stewart even approves. They’ll be looking for us in a minute to start the ceremony. I have the rings. Let’s get this puppy on the road.”
“Yeah, I can’t wait, my life has finally begun.

“Do you have everything you need, Mom?” Chase asked as he fussed with the small veil on her hat.
“Yes, I do. I want to thank you for being such a wonderful son since your father died. I leaned on you more than I should have. I’m so happy to be here with you and Rowan.
I can’t believe you let us share your day with the two of you.
” Edith started to sniff. Chase went over to her with her hanky and dabbed the corner of her eye so her makeup wouldn’t run.
“I have something for you.” Edith handed Chase a beautifully wrapped package. “This is just for you, a sort of memento. Open it up.”
Chase untied the ribbon and carefully removed the wrapping paper. Inside, nestled in a nest of tissue paper was a can of French cut green beans.
