She stepped forward and kissed him. “Yes, you may.”
His arm came around her. “I wish I had time.” He dropped his forehead to hers, staring into her eyes.
The green got to her. Dull and sluggish. “You need rest.”
“Not going to get it. Not sure I’d rest even if they let me take twenty. I want to be wrapped around you.”
“I’m suffering a similar affliction.” She tipped her head to travel the five inches difference in their height and kissed him again. He wrapped an arm around her and lifted her to his level. Something about that always got her.
“One kiss, woman. We’ll get sucked into a two-minute quickie and I can’t.”
“It wouldn’t be two minutes.”
“Precisely.”
The moment his mouth sealed to hers, she seriously questioned whether the kiss was a good idea. His fingers dove into her hair, tugging her lips to an angle where his tongue could catch hers in a wet, deep dance. Careening emotions knotted in her throat. She let the moment reel out because the man could kiss, and she wanted every minute. Her body flushed with heat. She collapsed against him, content with his strength wrapped around her. Shegave in to the need to trace the cords of his neck then moved her fingers to sift his hair.
Gasping, he broke the kiss and set her away from him. “Shit. You’re lethal. I can’t.”
“Thank you for that, though.” She kissed his jaw. “Still want hot chocolate. Water will heat fast.”
“Yeah, I do.” He leaned against the door again.
She poured water into the hot pot and plugged it in, then sorted in her top drawer for a disposable cup and a packet of hot chocolate. “You could sit on the bed, you know.”
“Nope. Staying right here.”
“Did you have a reason for coming over?”
“Do I need one?”
“Never, but how can I have your back if you don’t tell me you need me?”
“I always need you lately, but it wasn’t that. I needed the reality of you for a minute.”
She left the water to perk and walked over to him. Taking his hand, she pulled him to the dresser. “You look like you wanted to escape.”
He dropped her hand and ran his fingers over his scalp. “Sometimes I nap and have weird dreams, then I wake and can’t be certain you’re real.”
“Hey, that’s me, too. My dreams are ten times to messed up lately. I’m not Freud, but I think the reason could be the circumstances are uncertain, and this is so new between us.”
“Ah, the doctor makes it make sense.” He gave her a smile, not an act he usually did, and sherealized it was for her. The spark was back in his eyes.
She poured the water before it was too hot, quickly mixed his hot chocolate, and handed it off. “I hope this isn’t the only thing you’ve eaten today.”
“No, grabbed a meal at mess a while ago. Doogie has snacks. I’ll be fine.”
One day, she was going to be the one making sure he had snacks in his gear. She kept her hand in his while he took big swallows of the warm liquid. “Lots of rumors going around.”
“I figured. A lot not true. You know that, right?”
“Yes. More so than anybody else. You find him, yet? Yes or no.” She reached over and unplugged the pot.
“No. Neither.” He took the last swallow and handed her the cup.
It was a second before she caught that he’d answered for both the boy and IQS. She didn’t clarify that she wanted to know about the boy. She turned away to toss his cup in her trash.
“I have to go, honey.” He put a hand on her shoulder and turned her to him.
