All the tension fled.
He turned to Carter. “Out of surgery yet?”
“No. Nurse said another thirty minutes.”
He handed Cait’s laptop to K-Rock. “I need in Cait’s laptop. I’m assuming it has a password on it. I never asked her.”
“Sure. I can try. But don’t tell Grayson I hacked anything. I’m not supposed to do that anymore.” K-Rock’s husband was a stickler for the law.
Hunt managed a small smile. “Classified. Need to know.”
“Copy that. What are you looking for?”
“She video chats with Jackie, another doctor. I need to tell her what happened.”
“I’ll get on it. Not sure the hospital’s Wi-Fi is up to that task.”
“I know she talks to her from her quarters, so let’s see what connection we can tap into.”
“Give me ten minutes.” K-Rock walked to a corner and sat.
Doogie handed him the bag. “Eat. Burritos.”
Honestly, Hunt couldn’t stop looking at the door. Knowing Doogie could beat him down and shove the food in his mouth made him reach for the bag. He found himself a spot by K-Rock where he could still see the door and started on the three burritos in the bag with the apple and…a cookie.
The sight squeezed his heart until he thought he wouldn’t manage another beat.
Except the beat came because Cait needed him.
He set aside the cookie and devoured the burritos. Fuel would keep him alert. Doogie and Tommy left the room. Why he didn’t know and didn’t care to ask. Carter hovered by the door, monitoring the nurses station. Hernandez had found a random chair and dropped into a power nap. He should do the same. The tired drag hit him in real time.
“I’m in.” K-Rock grinned and handed Hunt the computer. “There’s the icon for her video chats and looks like the hospital has internet service.”
Hunt stuffed his garbage into the bag, set the apple with the cookie, and took the computer. “Remind me to praise your ‘other skills’ in your yearly eval.”
K-Rock smirked and left Hunt to the computer call. The man dropped a couple chairs over from Hernandez, tipped his own head back, and closed his eyes.
Hunt opened the directory and scrolled. Not many people were on her list, and Dr. Jackie Shay’s name popped first. Whether the doctor would answer or not, he didn’t know. Trying to calculate the time change to Texas, he gave up and hit connect. Late afternoon here translated to early morning there. The actual time didn’t matter. She had to be told.
“Hello! Cait what are you doing calling me so early? You don’t even crack an eye at this time.” Her voice gradually died out when she saw it wasn’t Cait.
“Travis Hunter, Dr. Shay.”
“Hunt.” Her whisper told him all he needed to know.
“She told you.”
Jackie snorted. “From the beginning. What’s wrong? Where’s Cait?” Her eyes flashed with panic as the moment sank in. “Hunt, where is she?”
Hunt rubbed his face. “She’s alive. She got caught in an explosion. She’s hurt.”
Jackie settled in a chair. Tears flooded her eyes. “Tell me. All of it.”
“Head injury. Concussion for sure. She’s not awake yet, and now she’s in surgery for internal injuries.”
“Who?”
“Who’s doing the surgery? Major Moss. Who did the bombing? Unknown.”
