Chapter 28

Anna woke to the touch of Katherine’s lips on hers. She recalled the previous night and smiled, pulling Katherine closer. “Morning.”

There was a muffled mewing sound between them.

“Sorry, Virginia.” Katherine pulled back.

Anna watched as Virginia curled back up and shut her eyes.

“Are we supposed to work around her?”

“It’s her bed as much as ours, I’m afraid. She could actually lay full claim to it as she spends more time in it than I do.”

“Well, we’re going to have to change that, aren’t we?” Anna swept a strand of Katherine’s hair behind her ear and leaned forward, planting a kiss on her lips. “You’re more beautiful than ever in the morning.”

Katherine blushed. “So are you. I was going to suggest we have a re-run of last night but…” They both looked down at Virginia who was watching them with one eye open.

“Perhaps not, eh?” Anna checked her phone beside the bed. “Shit, I forgot to set an alarm; the clearance guys will be waiting. I better get over there.”

Anna jumped out of bed and dressed under the examining eye of Katherine.

“It’s rude to stare.” Anna grinned, pleased to have the attention.

“Only if the stare is unwanted.”

Anna walked around to Katherine’s side of the bed and sat down. She leaned into her and kissed her, sliding her hand under the duvet.

Katherine moaned at her touch. “Do you have to go right now?”

“Honestly, there is no place I’d rather be than under that duvet, but they are going to be waiting for me.” Anna removed her hand and walked to the door. “Do you want to come along in a bit? Make sure I actually leave the place?”

“Sure, give me an hour.”

“You finish up.” She winked at Katherine and left.

As Anna stepped out of the house, she nearly trod on a bunch of flowers. She picked them up and examined them; a card was inside.

She returned to the bedroom and presented them to Katherine who was still in bed and stroking Virginia.

“Oh, you shouldn’t have!” Katherine said. Then she studied the envelope and added, “Hang on — you didn’t.”

“No, not me, sorry. Must be one of your other admirers.”

“Most likely, I have many.” Katherine took the card from the flowers and opened it. “Oh.”

“Oh?” Anna questioned.

Katherine handed the card to Anna.

“Dear Katherine, I very much hope we'll be working much closer together in the future. Perhaps we can do dinner sometime. M x.” Anna looked at Katherine and raised her eyebrows. “Something I should know?”

“Don’t ask me. I must pop in and see her anyway to accept the job. I’ll check there hasn’t been any misunderstanding.”

“You do that; I’m not sharing you with anyone. I didn’t even know she was a lesbian.” Anna tilted her head. “Come to think of it, though, I probably did.”

“It doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it means,” Katherine said.

“Well, good luck finding out. I’ll see you later.”
