“What do your senses tell you?” Riley asked quietly.
Dan drew in a deep breath. “That this is our man.”
Gary cleared his throat. “Riley, would you fetch us some coffee?”
“Sure.” He went to the door and paused. “Look, if you wanna give Dan a hug, it’s okay, y’know. You don’t have to send me out of the room.” He flashed Gary another grin. “I promise not to heave.”
Gary rolled his eyes.
When the door closed, Gary walked over to Dan, who smiled.
“I could use a hug right now.”
Gary wrapped his arms around him. “Tomorrow, you and I are going for a drive.”
“Where to?”
“Moon Island.”
Dan chuckled. “Sounds very romantic.”
Gary snickered. “Hardly. Unless your idea of romance is blowing holes in targets. It’s the firing range used by Boston PD.”
He frowned. “And why exactly are we going there?”
Gary was close enough for Dan to smell him, the same familiar scent that conjured feelings of safety, warmth….
Love.
“You’re gonna have a crash course in shooting. And after that, you’ll carry a gun too, with a permit of course.”
Dan wasn’t happy about that. “Why do I need a gun?”
Gary placed his hands on Dan’s shoulders and looked him in the eyes.
“Because this psycho is paying youwaytoo much attention, and if he comes after you, I want you to be ready.”
Dan didn’t reply. He knew Gary made a lot of sense.
He also knew what his instincts were telling him.
Heiscoming after me. And he wants me to know it.
Chapter Sixty-Four
Friday, January 25, 2019
IT ISN’Toften I get taken by surprise, but seeing Sharon’s name pop up on my phone gave me a momentary reaction ofwhat the fuck?
“To what do I owe the pleasure?”
I was being polite, of course. The memory of our two weeks together back in 2006 brought with it not pleasure, but irritation. My coworkers—employees—had made noises about an office “romance.” Yeah, Sharon would probably have said we were dating.
I wouldn’t go that far.
“How are you? Are you doing okay? I haven’t heard from you since you left Toronto.” Sharon huffed. “Not that that should surprise me. You got what you wanted, and then you dumped me, like you dumped all the others.”
I snorted. “If you’re still pissed, why are you bothering to call me? Or am I just one in a list of similar calls you have to make today? Unless I’ve gotten it wrong, and it isn’t ‘Call An Ex To Have A Rant’ day.”
