Chapter Seven

I WASsurprised to see Amy’s name pop up on my phone. The ball had been over a month ago, and I hadn’t heard a peep from any of them.
Unless this is one ofthosecalls.
I doubted it. Her life was pretty sweet right then.
“Good evening. What can I do for you?”
“Have there been any developments at your end?”
I frowned. “What kind of developments are we talking about? And have the social niceties died a death or something? Whatever happened to starting a call with a greeting?”
Not that I cared how she opened a conversation. All I wanted was for her to say whatever was on her mind and then hang up.
“That psychic who came to the ball. And that detective. Have you heard anything? Are they reopening Brad’s case? That had to be why they came, right? I could hardly breathe when they got to me.”
“Well, take a breath now, please, before you expire.” I paused. “You didn’t say anything, did you?”
“Of course not.” She sounded affronted that I’d even asked.
She wasn’tthatbig an idiot after all.
“Why would they question any of us? None of the murders can be linked to us.”
I caught her mild snort. “Sure they couldn’t—back then.Nowthey have Dan Porter. Who knows what he’ll discover?”
Ah,nowI got it. The psychic had Amy running scared.
“Zilch. That’s all he’ll discover. Just hold your nerve.” And without waiting for a reply, I disconnected.
I could have laid money on Amy being the first one to show signs of cracking. She was the weakest of them, always had been. How she’d ever gotten up enough nerve to come up with her little scheme was beyond me.
I’d have to keep an eye on that situation.
And if she does crack?
I wasn’t about to give her the chance to do that.
My mind went to Mitchell and Porter. I was going to find out everything I could about the Dynamic Duo. Anything that might prove useful.
It was time for them to join the game.
Chapter Eight

GREG COLLINS’Shome was on Harwich Road, Chestnut Hill, and it screamed opulence, with its huge gardens, indoor and outdoor pools, and luxury furnishings.
“I forgot,” Gary muttered as they waited for Greg in the elegant hallway. “He runs his stepdad’s empire now.” That explained the maid who answered the door. Then he remembered Dan’s background was pretty similar. Dan certainly seemed at ease in his surroundings.
A door opened, and Greg appeared, dressed in a pair of shorts and a tee. He was a tall man, with short, slightly wavy hair peppered with gray, and his toned arms, chest, and legs indicated a man who took care of himself.
Then Gary took a closer look at Greg’s right leg. “Wow. That would have caused a lot of pain at the time.” There was a scar above the knee, and Gary could make out teeth marks. “Shark bite?”
Greg nodded. “We were on vacation in Australia. They talk about stuff like this, but you don’t expect it to happen to you, right?” He gestured to his attire. “Forgive me, gentlemen, but I’ve just had a swim.”
