Page 66 of Killer's Obsession
Memphis.
My heart starts to pound, echoing in my ears.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
Like a string of images on a highlight reel, the memories come flooding in like a tidal wave.
Her finding out about her dad and Nikolai—about me claiming her at the table. The look on her face when she said I should have trusted her. Her taking off to Jade's. Finding her at the airfield. And Nikolai.
Nikolai! She was on his plane, bound and gagged.
“Where’s Memphis?” I rasp, trying to sit up.
I need to see her. I need to know that she’s okay.
Dread’s head whips around so fast it’s a wonder he doesn’t end up with whiplash.
“Oh, shit. You’re awake.”
My brows pull down at the sight of him. Dark circles hang under his bloodshot eyes. He looks fucking rough. He’s taking this Sarah shit harder than I thought.
He stands and stretches his arms over his head before coming closer.
“Memphis?” I ask again.
He opens his mouth to say something as I’m wrapping my fingers around the tubing of the IV in my hand, ready to pull it out. Just as I start to tug, the door swings open. I freeze and don’t move a muscle when Dread slips his hand inside his cut, grabbing for his piece.
Chief and Morpheus stroll in with coffee cups in their hands, talking low about something. Probably talking shit to each other about some game they bet on. Never seen two more competitive assholes in my life. If one says the sky is up, the other will swear that it’s down. They’re best friends, but I’m pretty sure they do that shit just to piss the other off.
Morpheus points his coffee cup at Dread. “That’s a fucking felony, you know?”
Chief narrows his eyes. “Motherfucker, get that shit out of here. Are youtryingto get locked up?”
Dread takes his hand off his gun. “Of course not. But I feel like a sitting duck when I’m not strapped.”
“Would you all shut the fuck up!” Pain shoots through me again. Fuck. “Where is Memphis?”
Dread shrugs his shoulders. “She left.”
In slow motion, Morpheus turns his head. He blinks slowly like he can’t believe what he’s seeing. “Oh shit. You’re awake.”
Why does everyone keep saying that?
“Left to go where?”
Chief’s head swings my way, and instantly his eyes drop to my hand that’s still wrapped around the IV tubing. “Don’t even fucking think about it,” he growls.
“Better do what he says,” Morpheus smirks, stepping closer and reaching over to press the red call button on the bed rail.
I narrow my eyes, but remove my hand.
“Dread!” I bark, then groan from the effort.
He throws his hands up in the air. “I don’t know. Home, I guess.”
“Nurse’s station,” a tinny voice says through the intercom, stopping me from asking any more questions.
“He’s awake,” Morph states.
