Freya is going to give me answers, whether she wants to or not.
CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
Freya
THE LAST TIME I was in this interrogation room I picked the lock and fled. The way River’s standing in front of the door with his arms crossed tells me he isn’t about to forget that. “Is this really necessary?” I ask.
Oz glances at River but carries on setting up the lie detector. He picks up one of the wires and peels back the sticky sheet. “I, uh, I need you to undo your shirt a bit.” A blush creeps up under the scruff on his jaw and I find myself curious about Oz once again. He’s quiet, doesn’t give much away. I’d say he’s shy, but it really doesn’t translate to the bedroom.
I look up at River from the metal chair I’m sitting on, waiting for an answer but he stays rooted to the spot and stares me down.
I sigh and undo the top two buttons of my shirt.
Oz pulls the material to the side. The back of his fingers brush against my chest. I grit my teeth as he sticks the sensor to my skin, trying not to think about how close his hands are to my breasts. The last thing I need is my arousal spiking on the monitors for everyone to see.
“Check her hands,” Eli says from where he’s leaning against the mirrored window. It doesn’t bode well for me that we’re back in the room they brought me to when I was first arrested.
“Eli, lay off.” An edge of frustration leaks into Oz’s voice. Half of me is comforted that he clearly doesn’t want to be doing this, the other half is just annoyed that he’s doing it anyway.
“Check them,” Eli presses. “I’ve seen someone pass one of these by pressing a pin into their thumb to mess with the readings.”
I raise both hands, sticking my middle fingers up at Eli. “Happy now?”
Eli’s jaw ticks. “Cute. Put them on the table.”
The metal surface is cold under my palms and unease creeps up my spine.
River’s wrong, I’ve not told a single lie, but I also haven’t told the whole truth. This could end very badly for me.
Oz finishes attaching the sensors and sits down on the other side of the table. He clicks at the laptop a few times then looks over at me. “I need to ask a couple of questions to get your base levels. Answer them truthfully.”
I nod.
“What color are your eyes?”
“Green.”
“Is Arthur Maxwell your father?”
“Yes.”
Oz checks the readings. “Okay, now I need you to tell a lie.”
Keep people on edge. Always do the unexpected.
“I have never hurt anyone.”
The air sucks out of the room. Three pairs of eyes pin me in place. I keep my face blank. If they want to know the truth, then I’m not going to sugar coat it. I’ll show them the real me.
Maybe it’s a good thing we’re doing this. My relationship with each of the guys is getting more complicated by the day.
Jude refused to be a part of this interrogation, which I appreciate but he’ll still see the results. I don’t know whether anyof them will feel the same way about me after this. Maybe that’s for the best. We should stop before any of us gets too attached.
A small voice in my head whispers it might already be too late for that.
Oz clears his throat, breaking the tension. He nods at River. “We’re good to go.”
River steps forward and takes the seat next to Oz. “Let’s go over what you told us three days ago.”
