Page 77 of Killer Honeymoon
Sawyer kissed his temple. “There’s no need to think or say anything. Just enjoy it.”
Sawyer knew Royce’s mind was reeling, but he flawlessly engaged in the myriad conversations around him throughout the evening. Tara and Candy stayed late to help them clean up and restore the rooms to their original pristine order.
“Did anyone see Mendoza leave?” Tara asked. “He was here one minute and gone the next.”
“Something must have come up,” Sawyer said.
“I’m sure he’s still in the building,” Royce countered. “It would be rude of him to leave without saying goodbye or commenting on a successful evening.”
“As rude as ending a phone conversation without saying goodbye?” Candy teased.
“Yep,” Royce replied.
After they finished, Royce announced he needed to make a quick stop at his office. They said goodbye to Tara and Candy, then headed down the hall.
“What did you forget?” Sawyer asked.
“Nothing. I just want to look at the photos again.”
Sawyer’s heart melted into a puddle of goo. “There’s no need, baby. I have a large set ready to hang up at home.”
Royce stopped and pulled Sawyer into his arms. “Fine. I want to make out in my office.”
“Better not start something you can’t finish,” Sawyer teased.
“Who says I can’t?”
As they approached Royce’s office, Sawyer noticed the door was open a few inches, and a sliver of light spilled into the hallway.
“I turned off the light and shut the door,” Royce whispered. “Student pranks already?”
The two of them eased closer to the office and peered inside. Mendoza sat on the edge of Royce’s desk with his legs parted so a very brawny Abe Beecham could stand between them. The latter had one hand on Mendoza’s hip, and the other cupped the chief’s face.
“Just say when, Lio,” Beecham said huskily.
The moment was so powerful and raw Sawyer felt horribly guilty for witnessing it. He grabbed Royce’s bicep and pulled him away from the door. Sawyer could tell he wanted to protest, but doing so would alert Mendoza and Beecham to their presence.
Royce snorted once they reached the elevator. “Something came up all right.”
Sawyer jabbed him with his elbow but couldn’t stop smiling. “Told you something was going on between them.”
Royce turned and glared at him. “Itoldyou.” Then he fanned his face. “Whew, that was kind of hot.”
“Stop perving on the chief and Beecham.”
Royce crossed his arms over his chest. “I will as soon as you stop eyeing Eddie.”
“I did not.”
“Did too,” Royce said. “Your cheeks were all pink, and you had googly eyes.”
“Get out of here. I admit I was thinking about how damn lucky I am.” Sawyer reached for Royce’s hand as the elevator doors opened. “I can’t wait to see how well you age.” They stepped out on the ground floor, and Sawyer added, “Not wishing our lives away, though.”
“Me either,” Royce replied. “I’m living for this moment right here.”
Sawyer sighed at how sweet Royce could be. “And every one that comes after.”
Royce leaned closer and put his mouth up to Sawyer’s ear. “Like the one where you’re stretched out on our bed wearing nothing but your new vest.”
Sawyer snorted. “There’s my guy.”
The End…for now ;)
