“Something has to be done! There’s no excuse for the way Alexandra was treated. What they did to her—that wasn’t punishment—it was torture and public humiliation!”
Brandt paced up and down, his hands clasped behind his back, his whole body tight with anger.
Alexandra was asleep now—she’d drifted off after she sucked him and swallowed a belly-full of his cream.
Brandt had left her curled peacefully in bed, physically healed but still emotionally scarred.
No matter what he did for her, she was never going to forget the pain and public disgrace she’d endured and he wanted someone to pay for it!
“There have been quite a few complaints about Magistrate GrOin-der,” Dr. TOo-loo said, frowning. The two men were talking on his private balcony, which overlooked the rolling meadow below. “I’ve heard rumors that some people even want to expel him from the Halls of Justice.”
“He wouldn’t listen to Alexandra when she tried to explain her circumstances,” Brandt growled. “He sentenced her to torture and shame on a whim—or because he was too lazy to do his job and actually find out the facts of the case before passing judgment! He needs to pay.”
“Well, you can’t pull a Magistrate down from his perch without the power of the people behind you,” Dr. TOo-loo cautioned him. “If you went after him alone, you’d earn yourself a death sentence—and they’d probably kill your little female with you. You need to be cautious, my friend—very cautious.”
“What can I do? I have to avenge what was done to Alexandra!” Brandt exclaimed. “I brought her here and she was harmed under my care. By Kindred tradition, she deserves vengeance!”
“I understand that. Look, let me write a petition for you and send it around. If Magistrate GrOin-der is as unpopular as I’ve heard, we’ll have the signatures to pull him down in no time.”
“You’d better be right.” Brandt balled his hands into fists. “Because if you’re not, I’m going after him myself. I don’t care if it’s legal or not. And I want the two officers who hurt Alexandra, too,” he added. “They’re going to be sorry they ever touched her—those fucking bastards!”
Dr. TOo-loo gave him an uneasy look.
“Patience, my friend! I don’t blame you for being angry—just give me a chance to do things the legal way first. That way Alexandra can speak out against him publicly—if she so chooses—and bear witness against him.”
Brandt frowned.
“I don’t know if she’ll want to do that or not. She’s incredibly brave but she’s been through a lot. I won’t blame her if she doesn’t want to relive it.”
Dr. TOo-loo nodded.
“I understand—I would feel the same way if T’linga had been treated so badly. I wouldn’t push her if I were you—just give her the option.”
“I’ll speak to her,” Brandt promised. But he wasn’t sure how Alexandra would react.
Either way, though, whether she chose to testify or not, he was going to make that fucking Magistrate and the two officers who had hurt and humiliated her sorry, he swore to himself.
The three of them were going to wish they had never been born by the time he was done with them.
