Amelia rolls her eyes, but her smile is bright as she bumps Jo’s shoulder with hers. “Come on, Hans. Kiss the guy later. It’s Jo’s world and we’re just living in it.”
I sense Hannah’s hesitation, like she wants to finish our conversation as much as I do, but there’s plenty of time for that. This isn’t our moment, I realize. It’s Jo’s and Jordan’s, and that’s important too.
“Go, Gorgeous,” I whisper, dropping a kiss on top of her head. “Celebrate with your sister and dance with your friends. We can talk later. Forever is a really long time.”
Hannah leans up and kisses my cheek. “I like the idea of forever with you,” she whispers, just loud enough for me to hear, dropping her arm from around my waist, walking into the center of the girls.
“You are so gone for her,” Elliot says, swinging an arm around my shoulders as I watch Hannah walk away .
“Fucking right, I am. She’s everything.”
“Love looks good on you.” Cooper, jacket gone and bowtie undone and hanging around his neck, saunters up and hands me a beer, standing on my other side.
I lift the bottle in thanks and take a sip. “Coop, every damn thing looks good on me.”
“Humble as always.” Jordan’s voice is full of amusement as he joins us, his own beer in hand. He is sporting a platinum wedding band on his ring finger and the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on his face.
It makes me want to yank my own wedding band out of my pocket and slide it on my finger but instead I shrug, tossing him a smile. “I am who I am. How about you, Jord? How does it feel to be a married man?”
It shouldn’t be possible, but Jordan’s smile grows wider as his eyes find Jo in the center of the dance floor, surrounded by all the girls, her arms around Hallie and Hannah and grinning at Cece, who is the absolute personification of dance like nobody’s watching as the girls circle around her. “Perfect,” he says. “It feels perfect.”
He turns to the three of us, and for just a second, his face turns serious.
“Thank you, guys. Not just for today, but for the last three years. For holding me together when I was falling apart, and for giving me what I needed, even if I didn’t always know what that was.
Somehow you did, and I wouldn’t be standing here without you.
You helped me live again.” He looks around the room, gaze landing back on Jo and then turning to us, meeting each of our eyes in turn.
“I’ll be grateful for that for the rest of my life. ”
I swallow hard against the ball of emotion that lodges in my throat, resting a hand on Jordan’s shoulder. “You don’t have to thank us for that.”
“It’s what brothers do.” Elliott squeezes Jordan’s other shoulder, his own eyes shining with unshed tears .
Cooper’s tears fall down his face freely, his arms coming around Jordan in a fierce hug. “Wyles brothers stick together.”
“Oh, my god, Rob, look at our boys.” All four of us turn at my mom’s voice.
She’s standing with my dad behind her, her hand clasped to her chest like she’s about to swoon on a fainting couch or something.
It’s all very on brand for her. “The four of you together are just something else again. I’m so damn proud of you. ”
She makes a beeline for us, somehow wrapping her arms around all four of her boys at the same time. “I love you all so fucking much. Today is my favorite day.”
I kiss the top of her head. “Love you right back, Mom. Stellar job on the wedding planning. Everything is perfect.”
“I’ll second that,” my dad says, unwinding my mom from us and wrapping an arm around her shoulder. “You and Cece did an amazing job.”
My mom surveys the room, satisfied smile on her face. “We did, didn’t we? The day I get my first daughter-in-law is a really, really good day. I could use some more of those, so you two should get moving on that.” She looks at Elliot and me expectantly and we all laugh.
“Talk to him.” I point at Elliot. “He’s closer than I am.”
My mom narrows her eyes at me, and I swear that for a split second, her eyes drop to where my hand is back in my pocket, spinning my wedding ring around my finger. “But is he really?”
Shit, the women in this family are really fucking spooky.
“Give them a break, Pam,” my dad says, sliding an arm around her and grinning at us. “It’s Jordan’s day. Tomorrow you can start bugging the rest of them about getting married.”
My mom heaves a long-suffering sigh that has us all laughing.
“You can be sure that I’ll do exactly that.
” Wedging herself in next to me, she wraps an arm around my waist as my brothers and my dad drift back over to the bar.
I can feel her eyes on me even though my eyes are squarely on Hannah, who is laughing with her sisters on the dance floor .
“You going to tell her how you feel?” my mom asks quietly.
I smile, my gaze never straying from my girl. “I was about to do exactly that, but then we got interrupted and I didn’t want her to miss any moments with her sisters.”
My mom squeezes me around the waist, leaning her head against my shoulder. “You’re a good man, Noah Wyles. That girl deserves all the love in the world.”
“I have it for her,” I say, my words an echo of the ones I said to Cece the day of my residency graduation. “I swear I do. She’ll never doubt how much I love her. I’ll tell her every day. A million times a day if I have to. There’s so much in me for her. I didn’t know I could feel this way.”
My mom sniffles, and when I look down, her signature tears are running down her face.
She looks up, narrowing her eyes are me.
“Don’t look at me like that. I’m allowed to cry when my third baby tells me he’s in love.
I’m so damn proud of you. I love you and I love Hannah.
She’s already ours, and I’m glad you’re finally making it official. ”
I smile down at her. “If it were up to me, I would have made it official forever ago, but I’m glad it’s now. Now feels right.”
“You’ve always been my most impatient kid. But some things—the right things—are worth waiting for.”
I glance back over at Hannah at the same time she looks at me, her smile beaming across the room and burrowing straight into my chest. “They sure are.”
