Page 63 of In Love and War
I took off my heels and lay down in my bed with the journal after sending a text off to Kai, letting him know that I might be a little while.
My phone buzzed as soon as I opened up to a random page, but it wasn’t a response from Kai like I was expecting.
El Diablo
You disappeared.
I was genuinely surprised he’d noticed.
Me
Wdym? I’m behind you
I chortled at the idea of him turning around and falling for my stupid little prank.
It really is the little things.
El Diablo
Funny. Where are you?
Me
Inside
El Diablo
Inside where?
Me
The house
I let out another little laugh, knowing that wasn’t what he was asking. I loved messing with him.
El Diablo
Amelia…
I actually heard his voice say it out loud in my head, which made me laugh harder. I debated for a minute, then decided to drop a pin and share my location with him on my phone. He could figure the rest out himself, though I was highly doubtful he would risk getting caught sneaking up to my old bedroom in my father’s house.
Because that would be very,verystupid.
Except, once again, I was wrong. Because a few minutes later, my door creaked again and in walked my boss in all of his six-foot-three glory, closing it again behind him.
“Oh myGod,what the actual hell are you doing?” I whisper screamed when I saw him, sitting upright on my bed.
“Huh. Is this your old bedroom?” he asked, looking around.
“Zac!What the fuck, you’re going to get caught, get out!” I threw a decorative pillow at him.
“Fireplace, couches… this room is bigger than my first apartment,” he said, catching the pillow with ease while he continued to walk toward me.
I had no words. None. So I just kind of sat there and gaped at him. I could not, for the life of me, believe he actually showed up.
“Why did you sneak away?” he asked, sitting on the edge of my bed now.
“It was… hot outside, I needed to cool down. Why areyouhere? I didn’t even know you were coming to the event. Why didn’t you tell me?”
