Still holding the photo, Logan did the same.
But no one was out there. Only a set of footprints in the snow that had just fallen.
“Camera?” Logan asked.
“Let me check the footage.” Duke hurried away.
Andi stood behind him, glancing at the picture with a frown. “I’m not sure how someone did this without us hearing anything.”
“Because this guy is good.” His jaw hardened. “And he wanted to send a message. He wants to let us—me—know that he has the upper hand.”
Duke returned with his computer. “I barely picked up on this guy’s image. He left this about twenty minutes ago, but he wore all black—even a mask over his face.”
“Of course, he did,” Logan muttered.
“He must have parked on the street, knowing he didn’t want his car to be seen,” Duke continued.
He glanced at the photo again. Poor Morgan. His Morgan.
She was alive . . . at least, that was how it appeared.
But he didn’t even want to think about what this man was doing to her.
Anger still coursing through him, Logan told Duke and Andi about that text he’d seen on Morgan’s phone.
“Read it again,” Andi said.
He found it so he could read it verbatim. “I have evidence that will prove that your friend Logan Gibson is a corrupt cop. He’ll be sent to prison for the rest of his life. If you don’t want this to happen, walk to the door on the west side of the building and step outside so we can talk. Choose wisely.”
“Who would have sent that to her?” Duke asked, his eyes narrow with thought.
“I have no idea.”
“Ashcroft?” Andi asked.
Logan grimaced. “I still have trouble believing that could be true. But it was definitely someone who wanted to get to Morgan by using me.”
“This person knows she cares about you,” Andi said.
Her words caused a hollow feeling to form in his gut. Did Morgan care about him just as much as he cared about her?
Logan thought he knew the answer, but part of him didn’t want to hope it was true.
But now that everything was on the line, he knew he couldn’t hold his feelings back from Morgan any longer. If he found her—whenhe found her—he was going to beg for her forgiveness.
Maybe she’d find it in her heart to give him a chance.
“We’re going to figure this out,” Duke promised, his voice steely with determination.
“I appreciate that.” Logan dropped into a chair across from them, exhaustion suddenly hitting him. “But right now, what I need is a lead. With every hour that passes, I know Morgan is in more and more danger.”
He felt helpless—and that was unacceptable.
He needed to track down evidence that would lead him to Morgan . . . before it was too late.
