Page 82 of How to Break My Heart
“That is true. Lex has taught me a lot. If I ever need anything, he’s always been there for me. If only my father could take a page out of his book.”
“I’ve only spoken to him for a few minutes, but I can see that.”
“It’s hard to trust people in our industry…” He trails off, then sighs. “Not everyone plays fair.”
“Well, as long as you do. You can’t control everyone, Aston. Just your own actions,” I remind him softly.
“You make it sound so easy.”
I still my movements, raising my eyes to meet his. “Being a good person is easy.”
Seconds pass as I wait for him to continue dancing. With hishands still around my waist and our bodies almost touching, his gaze pierces into me while I try to read him.
“My life isn’t easy,” he says with reluctance. “There’s a lot of responsibility and pressure on me to perform a certain way. Everything is calculated, nothing is done because it is my choice.”
“That’s not true.” I manage to smile. “It was your choice to bring me here as your plus-one. I’m sure there are plenty of other women you could have asked.”
“Yes… but with you, it feels like I have no choice in the matter. My head tells me all types of things, but my body doesn’t listen.” I wait with bated breath until he murmurs, “The night doesn’t have to end here, Everleigh.”
“We agreed to be friends,” I blurt out.
“Youwanted to be friends.” His soft gaze has turned fiery. “I wasn’t lying when I said you are driving me crazy.”
As I fall prey to his penetrating stare, my lips begin to tremble and the air surrounding us becomes thick and unbreathable.
It’s impossible.
I can no longer resist him.
Aston Beaumont is all I think about.
I move forward, pressing my body against his to whisper in his ear, “How far away is your place?”
CHAPTER 22Aston
Everleigh’s hand is firm in mine as I hurry to get us out of here.
The dance floor is crowded, forcing me to zigzag through the couples dancing. People try to stop me to say hello, but I smile politely and ignore being pulled into some trivial conversation.
I have only one thing on my mind.
Everleigh.
Will, the bastard, shakes his head with anI told you sosmirk. Earlier in the night, he and Amelia both cornered me with their opinions. Frankly, they were both like nagging parents. When Amelia stepped away, Will quickly laid it out for me—if I touch Everleigh, it’s game over.
He called it.
I’m done trying to fight it.
The car is waiting outside in the valet parking. I open the door and motion for Everleigh to get in, following quickly behind her. When we’re both inside, I tell Henry, the driver, to take us back to my apartment.
I keep my hands to myself despite my need to touch her. This stupid car doesn’t have a privacy screen, and I don’t want Henry to have a free show.
Not when Everleigh is involved.
Thankfully, my penthouse is only four blocks away, andbecause it’s late, the traffic is flowing, so we make it there in record time.
As soon as we are in the elevator, I press her up against the mirror and smash my mouth to hers. I fucking missed the taste of her, spending the week away in this torturous mind-fuck after she insisted we just be goddamnfriends.
