Page 128 of How to Break My Heart
I found my home in the man who broke my heart at the tender age of sixteen.
My best friend’s older brother.
The biggest red flag of all.

Two Weeks Later
One more time.”
Everleigh laughs beneath me, attempting to squirm out of my hold as I kiss the base of her neck.
“You’ve broken me!” Her pitched voice is cute, but not as cute as the beautiful smile on her face. “Seriously, I think my vagina is broken.”
“I’d like to bet all the money in the world it is not broken.”
She bites her bottom lip, a move that drives me crazy. Just as I’m about to prove to her how wrong she is, a knock on the door interrupts us.
“It’s room service. I’ll get it,” she says.
“You think I’m going to allow another man to see my girl naked?”
Everleigh rolls her eyes with a hidden smile teasing her mouth. “Firstly, you don’t know it’s a man. And secondly, I was going to wear a robe.”
I hop off her, then grab the robe from the chair and place it on, tying the belt around my middle. She brings the sheets to her chin, hiding her mischievous grin.
My hand reaches out to open the door, only to see a youngman carrying a silver tray. He eyes me, then notices Everleigh in the bed. I clear my throat, prompting him to pay attention to me and only me.
“I’ll take it from here,” I warn him, then sign the bill and add a tip.
I could be an asshole and not tip him for looking at my girl, but I circle the 20 percent before closing the door behind me.
“I’m starving,” Everleigh calls, then lets out a yawn.
“Lucky for you, food is meant to improve stamina.”
“Or, it can put you to sleep,” she teases.
“You’re lucky you’re so damn hot,” I tell her, then bring the plates to the bed.
Everleigh insists we turn on the television and watch some trashy show involving people marrying strangers. Before now, I barely had the time to watch any TV, but this show becomes interesting when one of the women reveals she’s attracted to another woman’s husband.
We’re starving, finishing the food off, and leaving the plates completely clean. With our stomachs full, we watch the show with light commentary every so often.
It’s been a whirlwind of events and both of us are trying to catch our breath.
When I approached Roland and asked to buy the land from him, he signed over the title so I could start my new future. I expected him to reject my offer based on his previous mention of wanting to keep it in the family, but his change of heart worked in my favor.
Everleigh hasn’t been able to contain her excitement, constantly showing me her Pinterest boards for inspiration. I love watching her gush over wainscoting, even though I don’t really care for wainscoting.
All I want is to make her happy.
And since that moment two weeks ago when I professed my love, I haven’t let her go.
So much so that we ended up in a hotel, because her brother cockblocked my plans.
I wrap my arms around her waist, kissing her shoulder. “Sleep… we have a big day tomorrow.”
