Chapter Fourteen

Kalbrac

Holding my Little girl’s hand while she talks to her friends through the communication unit is excruciating. She does a good job of letting them know that she’s safe and happy. She tells them she had the surgery to remove the tumor and recovered without incident.

My girl cries when she finds out her friends gathered some things for her and brought them to the club. I wasn’t even aware of that fact, and I’m grateful that a bag will be arriving on the next pod from Earth. We will be able to take it with us to Eleadia.

I let Clara talk for fifteen minutes. When she grows increasingly agitated and distressed, I squeeze her hand, encouraging her to wrap it up. She’s sad after she says her goodbyes, but I think it was the right thing to do. It gave her closure.

I haven’t asked her any questions about any other people in her life. She hasn’t mentioned parents or family. That’s odd, but I won’t say anything because I don’t want to distress her further. She’ll tell me more about herself when she’s ready.

After we end the call, I hold her in my arms and feed her a bottle. When it’s gone, she’s exhausted, and I pop a pacifier in her mouth and sit rocking her while she sleeps.

She’s perfection. I’m so blessed. I will miss her like crazy for the next six months, but then our lives will begin in earnest, and we will live tethered together for centuries.
