Page 6 of Her Darkest Possession
Indigo is out there. She's pregnant with my child.
And she's in the hands of people who hate her. People who won't hesitate to hurt her to get to me.
I slam my hand against the steering wheel and press harder on the gas as I merge onto the highway.
The speedometer climbs. I narrowly miss a sedan as I cut across three lanes to make my exit.
By all means, I should be careful. That old adage of only break one law at a time is already flashing like a warning in my head. But I don't care.
I need to get some fucking answers. I need to get to Indigo.
Before it's too late.
My phone is in my hand, and I'm already scrolling to a number I've done my best to never call.
When it connects, her voice slides through the speakers like oil on water.
"Tolya! How lovely of you to call after all this time." Lola's voice drips with false sweetness as she answers in Russian. "I was beginning to think you'd forgotten all about me."
"What the fuck did you do to my wife?" I snarl.
"Wife?" She laughs, the sound sharp as breaking glass. "I'm your wife now, silly. Unless you mean that pregnant little slut you decided to marry in my stead?"
My knuckles go white around the steering wheel. "What did you do to do her?"
"So impatient." She sighs dramatically. "If you must know, I had a nice little chat with her earlier this morning. Just girl talk. About the right thing she should do."
My teeth clenches.
"For herself," Lola continues. "For me. And for everyone who stands to get hurt on account of her."
"I swear to God, Lola, if you hurt her."
"Oh, I'm not a monster, Tolya." She pouts. "I wouldn'tdareharm one blue strand of hair on her pretty little head. Not after your threat at the gala all those weeks ago."
I feel my heartbeat start to slow, and the breath that I'd been holding since I got into the car escapes my lips in a silent huff.
"But I can't say the same for everyone else with her."
"What?"
"Your bastard sister tried to intervene, and for that, she's bleeding out on the street like the dog that she is."
"You fucking bi—" I snarl but Lola cuts me off before I can finish.
"And that's not all, Tolya," she continues, voice dripping with satisfaction. "I also have her precious little sister. Amara, isn't it? Such a sweet, innocent girl. What a shame she has to suffer for the sins of all the awful people in her life."
"Where are you?" I demand, my voice deadly quiet.
"Oh, now you want to see me?" Lola laughs. "You didn't seem interested in seeing me when you broke our engagement and humiliated my entire family."
I take a deep breath, trying to control the murderous rage threatening to consume me. Svetlana is bleeding out on the street. And Amara—Christ, Amara—that girl is terrified and alone with this monster.
"Lola," I say her name slowly and deliberately. "You're playing with fire. You have no idea what you've done."
"I know exactly what I've done." Her voice hardens. "I'm taking back what's mine. I always get what I want, Tolya. You should know that by now."
"If anything happens to them—to any of them—there won't be a place on earth where you can hide from me. I will burn everything in your world to the ground, sift through the ashes for your bones, and throw them into the Hudson."
