L evi scowled at King.
Before King could say another word, Levi walked around all of the men and muscled his way to the sofa.
Once there, he dropped to one knee and took Sara’s cold hands in his.
At his touch, she turned to look at him. Shock had blown her pupils wide.
“I know this is unexpected,” Levi began.
Sara yanked her hands away and scooted as far away from him as possible.
Ana planted her hand on Levi’s shoulder to keep him from reaching for Sara, and he dropped his hands.
“You think?” Sara spat, a flush colored high on her cheeks, her dark eyes were spitting fire at him.
“We have evidence,” Rowan cut in and handed her a laptop.
Ana took it instead of Sara and looked at the document. Sara leaned closer to Ana to see.
The two women took their time reading over what Levi and the rest of Aries already knew.
The evidence listed Chester Miller and his suspected dealings with criminal organizations as well as how many times Chester had met with Kevin over the past year.
“Oh my god,” Sara finally whispered, and Ana handed back the computer to Rowan.
“Why are you telling her this?” Ana glared at King.
“Because we need Sara’s help.”
“Wait…” Ana’s sharp gaze ran over King. “Are you DEA?”
“No, I’m part of an organization that is working with the DEA on this case,” King said slowly.
Levi reached out and touched Sara’s hand and she punched him hard in the forearm.
It didn’t hurt, but her striking out at him did.
“Ow,” Levi said, trying to get her sympathy, but Sara only glared at him.
“An organization on a task force with the DEA and they have evidence that Kevin Wilson is into some really shady shit,” Ana said.
“That’s pretty much it, minus the evidence part,” King said, but didn’t elaborate.
“No evidence?” Ana rolled her eyes.
“That’s right,” King growled.
Levi could tell Ana was rubbing King the wrong way. In order to defuse the blowout waiting to happen, he picked up where King had left off.
“What we are hoping is that we can get some of us in there to work for Wilson. That will give us time to gather evidence,” Levi said.
King scowled at him before turning back to Sara. “Beyond us working there, we hope you can help us get proof of his crimes.”
“No fucking way,” Levi said.
“No way,” Ana said at the same time.
“You didn’t say any of that,” Levi continued.
“What in the hell did you think we were going to do?” King glared right back at Levi.
“Not that. Absolutely not.” Levi shook his head. “She can’t do it.”
“The hell I can’t,” Sara cut in, and Levi turned on her fast.
At first, Sara shrank back, and then she hissed, lifted her hand, and aimed for his face, but he caught her wrist. Thwarted from smacking him, she jerked away and glared, rubbing at her wrist.
Sara turned to King, ignoring Levi.
“What information do you need?” Sara asked.
“Sara…” Ana, this time, tried to cut in, but Sara hushed her friend and kept her eyes on King.
“What’s your relationship with the owner?” King asked.
“Kevin? We’re friends.”
“And nothing else?”
“Exes, but we make better friends.”
Levi clenched his fists, attempting to stare a hole in King’s head.
The man might be in charge of one of the deepest, darkest covert ops units on American soil, but that wouldn’t stop Levi from punching the guy.
“We need to get a look at Miller’s books,” King said and shot Levi a smirk.
“That’s easy, I keep the books,” Sara said.
“No, he has a second set of ledgers,” King told her. “But first, I wouldn’t want you to go in alone on this.”
Levi let out a deep breath he didn’t even know he was holding. Damn right he was going in with Sara, if shit went south then he needed to be there to make sure the little spitfire came out unscathed.
“Who’s going in with me?” Sara asked.
“Me,” Levi said.
Sara glared at Levi. “No way.”
“I go with you, or you don’t go.” The words came from between Levi’s teeth.
“Sara, it wouldn’t necessarily be only Levi,” King said.
“What the hell does that mean?” Levi rounded on his boss.
“West and I got jobs there,” King said and turned back to Sara. “You’re not trained, and we need to be there to keep you safe.”
“But you really can’t guarantee my safety, can you?” Sara said.
“That’s right. It’s dangerous, so you can say no,” Levi said.
Sara fiddled with the blanket on her lap and then looked at him. Levi held her eyes, willing her to say no.
“I’ll do it, but I honestly think Kevin isn’t aware of what’s going on. And I’ve never seen a second set of books.”
“I’m going in,” Levi informed King.
His boss nodded with a small smirk working at the corner of his mouth.
“No!” Sara hissed.
“I’m going and that’s not up for debate,” Levi growled right back at her.
“Okay,” King said. “You’ll go in as her bodyguard.”
“Oh, hell no!” Sara glared daggers at him.
“You don’t have a say,” Levi said calmly.
Sara glared at them all before she spat words at him. “Don’t get any ideas. At best, you’ll be a temporary bodyguard.”
“Whatever you need to tell yourself, Princess,” Levi drawled, and her hand came flying out again.
He caught it for the second time and brought it to his lips. She gasped and jerked it away.
“Ass!” she spat.
“That’s enough.” Ana frowned at him, and Levi relented.
It would be effortless to justify being Sara’s bodyguard. Kevin Miller knew that Sara came from money, so spinning a story of how her parents were concerned after her attack would be easy.
But right then, she was pissed and rather than aggravate her further, he stood and took several steps away from Sara.
He needed to keep busy to avoid doing something drastic.
Like yank her from her spot between the girls and kiss her senseless.
