Story: Hangry Hearts
RANDALL
Julie and I are in the kitchen, cleaning up from our family’s first Sunday supper together since The Big Fight. In the dining room, there’s raucous laughter and bets being made on who will win the next round of cards.
Julie washes while I dry then place dishes in the rack. I’ve been itching to talk to her alone about my idea. Now seems like the best time. When the rest of the family is occupied.
“So… London told me about this pop-up storefront on Colorado Boulevard that’s opening up.” I trail off, hoping Julie gets the hint.
“Wait. Are you serious? Our families should do that.”
“Right?”
“But how would we have the money for renting a space?” asks Julie.
“London said his parents would be interested in investing in our families’ stand, particularly if Yum Yum Dim Sum and Sebae combined forces.”
Julie turns to face me with a smile on her face. “When did you and London become friends?”
“He’s actually a decent person.” She kisses my cheek. “There was a time when you and I used to not like each other.”
Julie pretends to be shocked. “Who, us? You must mean the two ladies in front of us who were once bitter rivals and are now arm in arm, probably discussing what they’ll make for the next Sunday supper.”
Julie slings her arm around me. I bring her closer to me.
“Exactly,” I say.
Julie brings my face to hers and we kiss.
