ETHAN PARKED THE brONCO AND RAN THROUGH THE PARKING LOT and into the small grocery store in town.

The store’s lights were dim, with every other overhead fluorescent lighted.

“Ethan Hall!”

the woman behind the register said.

“You’re either brave or stupid to come out in this kind of weather.”

Uma Morris owned The Corner Grocer, and Ethan had known her for years.

“It wasn’t raining like this when I left,”

Ethan said.

“Yeah, came in with a bang.

Knocked the power out.

We’re on the generator, which is why it’s so dark in here.

I was about to close up when I saw you pulling in.”

“Sorry to keep you.

I’ll just grab what I need.

I won’t be long.”

“Take your time.

I was about to lock the doors, but I’m not leaving until it settles down a bit.”

“Thanks, Uma.

I’ll be quick.”

Ethan pulled a grocery cart from the chain of others and hurried down the produce aisle.
